CEDAR FALL – A New Mexico man has been sentenced to jail in connection with bogus immigration documents found when Cedar Falls police arrested him for allegedly shoplifting at College Square Mall in October.

Judge Leonard Strand sentenced Aldair Rodriguez, 23 – a resident of Albuquerque and a citizen of Mexico --- to 73 days in jail and one year of supervised release during a hearing in U.S. District Court on Thursday. Rodriguez was given credit for time served and Rodriguez is being held in the United States Marshal’s Service until he can be turned over to immigration officials, who hold a detainer.

According to court records, officers arrested Rodriguez when he allegedly walked out of Von Maur without paying for a jacket and a hat on Oct. 22. Police found a forged Social Security card and a forged resident alien card with numbers registered to other people, court records state.

He was arrested on a state theft charge, which is still pending in court, and in December a federal grand jury indicted him on unlawful possession of identification documents. He pleaded to the federal charge in January.
