Man in Underwear Who Shut Down Houston Highway Not Charged With Crime

A man who shut down a major highway by scaling to the top of a sign near downtown Houston wearing nothing but underwear was not charged by police.
The man threatened to jump off the sign unless police promised to satisfy his desire to “go back to El Salvador.” Negotiators with a Houston Police SWAT team told the man that “if he came down they would take him” there.
The man came down from the sign without injury to end the ordeal, which shut down traffic in both directions on one of the city’s busiest roads for two hours.
Despite the trouble caused by the underwear-clad man, he was not charged with any crimes.
A public information official with the Houston Police Department told the Washington Free Beaconthat the man was taken by police to a local hospital where he underwent a psychological evaluation, and that the department has no plans to press any charges at a later date.
Although the man was reportedly told that he would be taken back to El Salvador, the official explained that the department has no ability to follow through on the promise.
The department says that it cannot comment on the legal status of the man’s presence in the United States, but said that if it was determined that he was not legally in the country then the department would have alerted Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities.
