The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office will stop doing courtesy holds of illegal immigrants in its jails for the U.S. Immigration and Customs and Immigration Enforcement, the Sheriff's Office said late Friday.
Officials with the Sheriff's Office said that, based on legal advice from the Maricopa County attorney, the Sheriff's Office no longer will hold undocumented immigrants longer than they would have been held if they were a legal resident.
ICE agents already are based in the county jails and identify inmates' immigration status. Penzone said he alerted ICE officials to the new policy earlier Friday.
