N.C. - Youths protest driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants

Elver Barrios, 22, is the community organizer for United 4 the Dream, a youth group for undocumented immigrants. Here, he stands with a mock-up of the new licenses. He said the licenses will be just another way to discriminate against the Latino community.

More than 45 protesters gathered in uptown Charlotte Thursday to demonstrate against controversial driver’s licenses that will be issued to immigrants who’ve been granted federal protection from deportation for two years.

In North Carolina, the licenses, which will be issued to an estimated 18,000 young people, will read “No lawful status” on the front and back and will have a pink header instead of the standard blue.

Critics of the design of the licenses say they could cause trouble for immigrants who’ve been granted “deferred action” status by the Obama administration – meaning their presence in the U.S. is temporary but legal.

Gov. Pat McCrory, who signed off on the licenses, has said he thought it was important that the driver’s licenses for immigrants clearly distinguish “between legal presence versus legal status.”

McCrory said he wanted to make sure the licenses were granted but also ensure that they clearly differed in appearance from other licenses issued by the state to prevent misuse.

Led by the Latin American Coalition, the activists protested on each corner of the square at Trade and Tryon streets, each wearing a pink “I”. Elver Barrios, community organizer for United 4 the Dream, said the “I’s” represented something like the Scarlet Letter.

“Having these licenses is just another form of discrimination,” he said. “Carrying them is branding us, just like they branded the Jewish people in the 1940s.”

Jess George, executive director of the coalition, said the protest only brought positive reactions from Charlotteans.

“We are standing in the middle of this city, with all these beautiful skyscrapers, and immigrants are the ones who built them,” she said. “When people pass by us and hear what we are protesting, they can’t believe it.”

She says the licenses will create further discrimination for the Latino community.

“I think creating the licenses is a visible statement that immigrants are different from the rest of us,” she said. “It sets a dangerous precedent and opens the door to racial profiling and discrimination.”

It is never enough. They are just here, they didn't come legally and they have no respect for our laws, any of them. They demonstrate in the streets the same way they do in the trashy countries that they come from. JMO

Concerning the article on this web page, N.C.--Youths protest .... This article quotes one of the demonstrators as saying: "Having these licenes is just another form of discrimination...Carrying them is branding us just like they branded the Jewish people in the 1940's."

Obviousely what this little man wants is to have illegal aliens issued drivers's licenes that are identical to those given to legal citizens. I don't think it is necessary to explain why someone would want to do that.

I am so angry my hands are shaking.

I had about half a dozen uncles who fought in WWII. One was three times wounded fighting the Japanese; one fought the Nazis across Europe from Normandy to Prague; another gave the ultimate sacrifice and died in the Battle of the Bulge -- fighting the Nazis. How dare this little -- thing -- make a comparison between Nazis and citizens like me who want common sense laws? And how dare the "news" media give credibility and pulicize the garbager that comes out of his mouth without any critical rebuttal -- perhaps quoting a reply from someone like me. They do that to us constantly, don't they? If they give us any news coverage at all, it is always coupled to someone who is from the open borders lobby, isn't that true? Within the body of a "news" article it is often like the "reporter" is carrying on a running, printed argument with everyting we say.

I and my brother and my nephew (who saw action in Operation Desert Storm) are milirtary veterans. What personal sacrifices has this -- thing -- made? I'll guess -- none?

This country belongs to us and LEGAL American citizens. We built it; we sacrificed for it; we fought for and died for it. It is OUR HOME, and we have the MORAL RIGHT to decide who and under what rules foreigners are permitted entry and residence in OUR HOME -- and to decide the rules for those who drive on the roads.
    we paid for.

No, it's never enough. Never will be for these types. Unfortunately, they are the 'squeaky wheel' of the moment. They, and their socialist/progressive cohorts hold the narrative in this country by controlling the education system and the media. Until WE start educating our children again and demanding better (through their pocketbooks via what we view, read, and listen to) from all forms of media, we will always be 'playing defense'. Allowing political correctness in all it's forms has led to what we have now. It's got to stop. Say what you mean and mean what you say...to hell with the consequences....just be able to back it up with truth.
