Drug traffickers’ assassins linked to illegal immigration cartel?

Okay, this is very odd. I’m still having trouble piecing together exactly who is being held where, and why, and who these armed soldiers are that are supposedly going to bust this Cuban-American immigrant smuggler out of a Mexican jail.

Cardentey, who has a residence in Miami, was detained Wednesday after authorities found his boat drifting off Quintana Roo’s Caribbean coast. He was accused of trafficking Cubans to the United States via Mexico, Jimenez said.

Authorities declined to say whether Cardentey is linked to an attack last week in which masked gunmen forced immigration agents off a bus and then fled with 33 Cubans and four Central Americans on board.

18 of those Cubans were caught inside the United States. And nine Mexican immigration officials are being detained and investigated for possible involvement.

(They’re not very welcoming to illegal immigrants there in Mexico, are they?)

And possibly most important, Mexico is anticipating a jailbreak attempt to spring the Cuban. This AP report (translated from Spanish by Google) suggests the Zetas, or possibly the Kaibils, are tied to this shady Hanoy Cardentey character.
