Ultralight Plane Crashes in Arizona, Smugglers Apprehended

    (Saturday, May 30, 2009)
Yuma, Ariz. – Utilizing radar technology, Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Station thwarted an aerial smuggling attempt.

This morning, at about 4:45 a.m., Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Station manning a Mobile Surveillance System ground-based radar unit detected a low-flying aircraft making an illegal entry into the United States. Agents tracked the aircraft crossing the Colorado River south of County 14th Street, and continuing eastbound.

Agents observed the aircraft impacting with the ground north of County 15th Street, about half a mile west of Avenue G. The pilot was then observed emerging from the wreckage and running west toward the Colorado River.

Responding Border Patrol agents determined that the suspected smuggler had absconded to Mexico; however, two subjects suspected of involvement with the smuggling attempt were arrested at the scene.

Two large plastic-wrapped packages of marijuana, with a total weight of 275.6 pounds and an estimated street value of $220,480, were recovered from the downed aircraft.

The two subjects were turned over to U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. The aircraft and contraband have been seized by the Border Patrol.

Nogales Ports Sizzle with $5.1 Million in Narcotic Seizures
    http://cbp.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/news_re ... 2009_6.xml

    (Tuesday, May 12, 2009)
Nogales, Ariz. — In 11 days, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Nogales ports of entry foiled 26 attempts to smuggle narcotics into the United States and prevented 73 immigration violators from entering the U.S. illegally.

Since May 1, officers at the DeConcini and Mariposa ports of entry seized 700 pounds of marijuana, 81 pounds of cocaine, and 34 pounds of methamphetamine for a total of 815 pounds of the illicit drugs. The combined estimated street value of the narcotics is $5.1 million. The attempts for smuggling the contraband ranged from body carrying to concealing the narcotics in vehicles.

In all the cases, the narcotics were seized and the violators were turned over to Immigration Customs Enforcement for further investigation.

There were also numerous violators arrested on suspicion of identity theft for attempting to enter the U.S. under false pretense.

It is important to note that a criminal complaint is simply the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Field Operations is responsible for securing our borders at the ports of entry. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers’ primary mission is anti-terrorism; they screen all people, vehicles, and goods entering the United States, while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel into and out of the United States. Their mission also includes carrying out traditional border-related responsibilities, including narcotics interdiction, enforcing immigration law, protecting the nation’s food supply and agriculture industry from pests and diseases, and enforcing trade laws.

While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.

California CBP Apprehends Man Wanted for Murder in Texas
    (Friday, May 29, 2009)

San Diego – A 44-year old Santa Ana, Claif. resident wanted for a 1997 murder in Texas was apprehended Thursday night as he entered the United States through the Otay Mesa, Calif. passenger port of entry, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced today.

Juan Castelan Michaca, a legal permanent resident from Mexico, was detained by CBP officers at about 8:30 p.m. on yesterday after he entered the port as a passenger in a California-plated blue Chevrolet Suburban.

Castelan presented a valid legal permanent resident document from which CBP officers developed information regarding the outstanding felony warrant from Harris County, Texas.

Castelan was taken into custody and later transported to the San Diego central jail to await extradition.

Border Patrol Thwarts Big Rig Smuggling Attempts
Agents Nab Second Smuggling Load in a Week
    http://cbp.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/news_re ... 2009_3.xml
    (Monday, May 04, 2009)
Pine Valley, Calif. — In a possible trend, two smuggling attempts in less than a week involving the use of semi tractor-trailers in East County have been prevented by Border Patrol agents.

On Saturday, May 2, 2009, agents came across 19 Mexican nationals who were being smuggled inside a semi tractor-trailer at the Border Patrol checkpoint on westbound Interstate 8 in Pine Valley. At about 1 a.m., agents encountered the semi as it arrived at the checkpoint inspection. The semi was directed to secondary inspection after agents observed that the vehicle’s driver appeared nervous during questioning.

Upon opening the doors of the semi’s cargo trailer, agents found 16 men and three women sitting inside. The driver of the semi, a 38-year-old resident of San Bernardino, California, was arrested and is currently in federal custody awaiting prosecution for alien smuggling.

In a similar incident, on the evening of April 29, 2009, the Border Patrol arrested 11 Mexican nationals smuggled inside a modified compartment of a semi tractor-trailer stopped at the Border Patrol checkpoint in Pine Valley.
