McCain Flirting With Immigration Reform Support

Mon Feb 7, 10:47 am ET

Graham, McCain flirting with immigration reform support:

    By Liz Goodwin

Two Republican senators who took a hard right turn against immigration reform last spring are signaling they may be prepared to revisit comprehensive immigration reform in the new Congress.

Of course, the GOP-controlled House would most likely never pass an immigration bill erecting a pathway to citizenship for the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants. But GOP Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina are nonetheless hinting that the Senate may attempt reform anyway.

Graham told Politico's Carrie Budoff Brown he is again in talks with New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, though he said their plans are in the "infant stage." McCain said yesterday on CNN he would consider immigration reform once the border is secure. (A deadline that translates, in all likelihood, to Congress first passing the "10-point" border security bill that he and his home-state GOP senate colleague John Kyl have put forward to send 3,000 troops to the border). Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, said in an interview that McCain, once a champion of reform, told him "that there's a shot at this."

Southern Baptist Convention leader Rev. Richard Land, a conservative supporter of comprehensive immigration reform, says the move would be more effective if led by new faces. He suggested newly elected GOP Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. Rubio's spokesman Alex Burgos tells The Lookout that the senator "doesn't belieeve that amnesty is the correct solution to this challenge," and would vote against comprehensive immigration reform.

Ah John McCain!! Always the fork tongued weasel, he never changes. JD Hayworth called it right, as soon as he was re-elected he would push amnesty again. It's exactly what he is getting ready to do right now. I wish he would retire, we are all sick of him. If he had been elected President he would be leading the charge on amnesty. He makes me sick to look at him.

When Senator McCain was running to become Senator again not to many months ago he talked about how much he supports laws against undocumented aliens. Possibly, the reason he were reselected.

What happen since he became a reselected Senator?

What the @&%# did you expect? Until there is another industrial revolution in this country the demand for labor will continue. I'm sure the farmers still haven't figured out what they are going to do to modernize their operations. The Republican businesspeople who paid for our new Congress are going to want pay back. The illegal aliens are hunkered down in their burger-flippin' jobs, stayin' just under the radar. The American kids have moved back home, since Obama will cover them with healthcare to age 26, which won't get repealed anyway.

I'm a Southern Baptist, so keep that in mind when I declare that the Southern Baptist Convention should lose its 501 C 3 not-for-profit, tax-exempt status because of the statements and positions put forth by its President, Richard Land. If he's only speaking about himself and not the Convention, then he needs to so declare and resign as President so he can be replaced with someone who abides the tax law for 501 C 3 organizations which means thou shalt not use the organization to lobby or influence legislation.

    http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0, ... 92,00.html

    Lobbying

In general, no organization may qualify for section 501(c)(3) status if a substantial part of its activities is attempting to influence legislation (commonly known as lobbying). A 501(c)(3) organization may engage in some lobbying, but too much lobbying activity risks loss of tax-exempt status.

Legislation includes action by Congress, any state legislature, any local council, or similar governing body, with respect to acts, bills, resolutions, or similar items (such as legislative confirmation of appointive office), or by the public in referendum, ballot initiative, constitutional amendment, or similar procedure. It does not include actions by executive, judicial, or administrative bodies.

An organization will be regarded as attempting to influence legislation if it contacts, or urges the public to contact, members or employees of a legislative body for the purpose of proposing, supporting, or opposing legislation, or if the organization advocates the adoption or rejection of legislation.

Organizations may, however, involve themselves in issues of public policy without the activity being considered as lobbying. For example, organizations may conduct educational meetings, prepare and distribute educational materials, or otherwise consider public policy issues in an educational manner without jeopardizing their tax-exempt status.
Furthermore why would Land suggest that Rubio should lead the way for comprehensive immigration reform when Rubio is clearly against immigration reform and amnesty??!!
