McCain holds town hall on immigration reform

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain is returning to his home state to chat up immigration reform.

McCain is scheduled to hold a town hall in Phoenix on Monday.

The meeting comes more than a month after McCain defended a proposed path to citizenship for the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants to an angry crowd at a town hall in suburban Phoenix.

It's unclear if the crowd in Phoenix on Monday will be more receptive. Immigration reform remains a divisive issue in Arizona, which passed its expansive anti-illegal immigration law in 2010.

McCain is working with a bipartisan group of senators to overhaul immigration. He has said he wants assurances on border security as Congress weighs what could be the biggest changes to immigration law in nearly 30 years.

If not, McCain will get grilled and booed by his constituents. McCain knows better to meet with the public through open doors and well publicized meetings. This is a setup I bet!

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Sen. John McCain says civil rights advocates applauding his work on immigration reform won't be happy with the results.

McCain told a town hall meeting in northern Phoenix Monday that he and other lawmakers working on immigration legislation haven't been able to agree on key details and it's unclear when a compromise might be brokered.

McCain says the so-called Gang of Eight has agreed on more work visas for workers and protections for illegal immigrants brought to the country as children, but declined to provide specific details.

The more than 150 people at the meeting included both proponents and critics of reform. McCain called for civility when the debate occasionally turned into a shouting match.

President Barack Obama renewed Monday his call on Congress to pass immigration reform.

Despite criticism of the term, veteran Sen. John McCain is adamant that he won’t stop using the words “illegal immigrant.”

At a meeting in Phoenix, McCain was asked by a 25-year-old immigrant to “please drop the i-word” in favor of the word “undocumented,” The Arizona Republic reports.

The senator declined, pointing out, “Someone who crosses our borders illegally is here illegally.”

He added, “You can call it whatever you want to, but it’s illegal. I think there’s a big difference between someone who does something that’s illegal and someone who’s undocumented. I’ll continue to call it illegal.”

The Arizona senator is a member of the Gang of Eight senators who are negotiating an immigration reform plan. “I don’t know if we can achieve agreement or not,” he said at the town hall meeting.

“We’ve been working literally night and day. And we may not succeed. But the other members of this negotiating team, I believe, are negotiating in good faith. We’ve made progress in a number of areas that I am encouraged by, but there are still areas that we are not in agreement.”

He warned one immigrant-rights worker at the meeting, who said she wanted to thank him for his work, “You’re not going to be completely happy with the legislation.”
