McConnell Caves, But Reid Wants Full Surrender From Boehner As Well

Republican leadership in the Senate is fully caving to the demands of Democratic lawmakers calling for a so-called “clean” Department of Homeland Security funding bill that leaves President Obama’s executive amnesty intact, but Democrats are still balking at the plan.

“I’ve indicated to the Democratic leader that I’d be happy to have his cooperation to advance consideration of a clean DHS bill, which would carry us through September 30,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told reporters Tuesday. “With Democratic cooperation on a position they have been advocating for the last two months, we could have that vote very quickly.”

“This is a total victory for the Obama position,” said a GOP senator unhappy with McConnell’s plan. “The House hasn’t passed it yet, so they might could come up with something. But that’s a grim prospect.”

But Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid balked at the offer, saying Democrats would continue to filibuster the bill until House Speaker John Boehner indicated he was willing to also pass it through the House.

“The problem is everybody, I’m waiting to hear from the Speaker. We have to make sure people understand the bicameral nature of this Congress that we serve in. So to have Sen. McConnell just pass the ball over to the House isn’t going to do the trick. I’m waiting to hear from the Speaker,” Reid said.

According to Reid, until he hears from Boehner, the issue remains “where we were.”

“We’re willing to debate anything they want dealing with immigration, after we fund homeland security,” Reid said.

In conjunction with the clean funding bill, McConnell said the Senate would also vote on stand-alone legislation block the Obama’s most recent executive amnesty, announced in November, which would provide legal status and work permits to nearly 5 million illegal immigrants and is currently under a court-issued injunction.

“My hope is that the Senate will act. I don’t know what the House will do but I do think we have a responsibility to act here. We have a solution to the problem that deals with both things: number one giving senators an opportunity to express their disapproval of what the president did in November and some Democrats — as you know — have already announced they agree with me on that,” McConnell said, adding that the second aspect, funding DHS with a clean bill, is exactly what Democrats have requested.

“I don’t know what’s not to like about this,” he added.

The move toward a clean DHS funding bill comes after weeks of a Democratic filibuster of an initial House-passed DHS funding bill that would block all of Obama’s executive amnesties. It also occurs following a federal judge’s ruling temporarily blocking Obama’s November executive amnesty.

Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) pointed to the recent court order as an aspect of consolation.

“The most important point I think we need to acknowledge is that with this federal court injunction in place, any money that the United States Congress appropriates for the Department of Homeland Security will not go to fund the president’s illegal executive action because it’s barred by a federal court inunction and subject to a contempt of court finding,” Cornyn said, arguing that this week the Senate must ensure DHS is funded.

Reid stressed the importance of funding the department.

“We need to protect our homeland. We have people being beheaded. People being stacked in cages, one of them has been burned in a cage,” he added. “We have the direct threat to our malls around America and we have to be as prepared for these bad people, as ISIS is prepared and these other terrorist groups to do harm to us. ”

Democrats echoed Reid’s sentiment that the matter is now up to Boehner.

“So now all eyes are on Speaker Boehner,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters. “Will he fully fund homeland security in a separate bill sent it to the president for a signature and then both houses can debate immigration — as long as the majority in each house wants to — or is he going to go back to his old way and say ‘I’ll do this, that, or the other thing but I won’t fund homeland security?’”

Democrats: We’ll Block DHS Funds Until Boehner Surrenders

    6:47 PM 02/24/2015
    Neil Munro

Top Democrats said Feb. 23 they will hold the homeland security budget hostage until the GOP’s House caucus agrees to quit its popular anti-amnesty efforts.

“If we are going to avoid a government shutdown on the Department of Homeland Security, we need a commitment from Speaker Boehner that we have a bipartisan, bicameral approval to end this deadlock,” Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin told reporters during a Tuesday press conference in the Senate.

Durbin spoke shortly after the Senate’s GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared to submit to the Democrats’ demands that the DHS 2015 budget not curb spending on the president’s November amnesty.

Democrats have filibustered the House-passed DHS budget bill four times just to block the anti-amnesty language.

McConnell agreed Feb. 22 to allow separate votes on a toothless DHS budget bill, and a bill that would curb Obama’s amnesty plans.

That’s a complete victory for the Democrats, because McConnell’s plan would allow them to kill the anti-amnesty bill, while also approving the separated DHS funding bill.

But McConnell’s surrender isn’t enough for Democrats.

They also want Boehner to give up the anti-amnesty fight even though almost 90 percent of the GOP base opposes the amnesty.

“All eyes are on Speaker Boehner,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said during the press conference.

“Will he fully fund Homeland Security in a separate bill, send it the president for signature?… or is he going to go back to his old ways and say ‘I’ll do this, that or the other thing, but I won’t fully fund homeland security.’”

In fact, Boehner’s DHS bill that is being blocked by Schumer and the Democrats fully funds the DHS budget.

“I’m waiting to hear from the Speaker,” said Sen. Harry Reid, the Democrats’ minority leaders in the Senate. “We have to make sure that people understand the bicameral nature of this conversation, so that Sen. McConnell just passing the ball over to the House isn’t going to do the trick.”

“[Boehner] has indicated to me through his staff that he’ll be in touch sometime soon and until that time comes, we are where we were,” Reid said.

Obama’s Nov. 20 amnesty would provide work-permits and tax rebates to roughly 5 million illegal immigrants.

Obama is pushing the amnesty with support from all Democratic senators, even though middle-class Americans are facing stalled wages, declining workplace participation and a growing wealth gap between wage-earners and the investors who gain from the cheap labor and government-aided customers provided by Obama’s high-immigration policies.

Since 2009, Obama has added roughly 9 million working-age immigrants to the workforce, where they will compete for jobs against the roughly 24 million young Americans who have entered the workforce.

On Feb. 23, Obama’s deputies announced they would provide work permits to roughly 180,000 additional guest workers over the next year.

In November 2014, one in every five U.S. jobs was held by a foreign-born worker, up from one-in-six jobs in January 2010, according to federal data highlighted by the Center for Immigration Studies.

Obama’s immigration polices are unpopular, especially among Republicans and people worried about the economy. Only 7 percent of Americans want a higher level of immigration.

The Daily Caller asked Reid if polls showed the amnesty is popular among Americans. “I don’t know what’s popular, but I know what’s the right thing to do,” he replied.

The GOP’s base is already pushing back against McConnell’s apparent surrender.

“As the Majority Leader said last year, the power of the purse is the ‘only tool’ Congress has to rein in executive overreach,” said Michael Needham, head of Heritage Action.

“Heritage Action will [penalize Senators who vote for a] DHS bill that would allow for the funding of the President’s unconstitutional amnesty,” he said.

Almost 90 percent of the GOP base opposes Obama’s amnesty plans.

So far, the GOP leaders have not mounted an election-style PR campaign to pressure Democratic senators to support the anti-amnesty bill. Many GOP donors favor the president’s high-immigration policies.

McConnell really screwed up. There was no point to this for him or Republicans or the issue of stopping Obama Amnesty. Any Republican who wants to hang their hat on the court system is not realistic or informed. So the strength of our Republican Party is not in the US Senate leadership, it hopefully will be in the US House of Representatives, thanks to the new-comers who were specifically elected to achieve certain goals for the citizens of the United States.

They also want Boehner to give up the anti-amnesty fight even though almost 90 percent of the GOP base opposes the amnesty.

“All eyes are on Speaker Boehner,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said during the press conference.
Yes, they are. And if the US House of Representatives doesn't hold the line and stand their ground to use their majority to stop illegal immigration, then there is no further reason for taxpayers to fund a DHS at all, since there's no point to it, because there are no benefits to having this agency for the American people. Americans would be far better off to dismantle this entire department and distribute the $100 billion to the states who want to enforce US immigration law, respond to floods and emergencies on their own, and handle their own airport security. After all, the illegal aliens are in their states, the floods and emergencies occur in their states, and the airports are theirs as well.

Harry, you're just worried the cartels you work for are going to put your head in a cage. And they might, that's why you shouldn't have decided to sell out your own country to a bunch of drug-running thugs.

Beheadings are very popular in Mexico, or have you not been paying attention? It's a favorite past-time of the cartels you work for that are behind this travesty of illegal immigration. So I find it very interesting that you think ISIS is a threat to the heads of Americans inside the United States but that illegal aliens from Mexico are not, and that funding DHS would make any difference with either one, since DHS has absolutely nothing to do with foreign events, and hasn't lifted a finger to make any difference with it here, instead choosing to allow 20 million illegal aliens to nest comfortably here in violation of the very law DHS is funded to enforce.

And stop acting like a Nazi calling our country the "homeland". This is not a word that Americans use to describe our nation, which should have been our first clue that we were being set-up by this vile department the day it was formed.

I am not surprised and am thoroughly disgusted. I knew a GOP Senate wouldn't be any better than the Dem Senate was on immigration.

The injunction provided a respite, but IMO the wholesale sell out of Americans and the quality of their lives, has only been stalled.

We might be able to defeat some of these treacherous buggers at the next elections, but for the moment, patriots are likely to take a beating.

I'd love to be proven wrong on this one.

On this issue republicans have been just as dangerous to Americans as democrats for 29 years. But republican voters have refused to acknowledge that as truth. A few have, but they are not influencing the majority of republicans. Republicans must stop resting on their laurels of the past and show some intelligent governing of today's America. McConnell swore that he knows how to govern, and caves in the first 2 months of being majority leader! Is anyone impressed with the new republican leadership? McConnell and Boehner, a real pair of courageous leaders? I don't think so!

On this issue republicans have been just as dangerous to Americans as democrats for 29 years. But republican voters have refused to acknowledge that as truth.
We've unfortunately elected too many Odd-Fellows, and by that I means people with twisted views and contradictory ideas. For example, some of these that we don't understand want to balance the budget and reduce government spending, yet at the same time they won't stand up against the greatest cause of government spending, which is illegal immigration and excess legal immigration that generate poverty not only amongst illegal aliens but legal immigrants as well, which together put Americans out of work and generate growth in poverty amongst US citizens who lost jobs to illegal aliens and immigrants or suffer from deflated wages and hours because of the over supply of labor in the US.

So any Republican who claims they want to balance the budget, reduce government spending, limit the size of government, and stop debt growth but who won't take every step available and possible to stop illegal immigration, remove illegal aliens from our premises and significantly reduce legal immigration are twisted in their philosophy, confused in their minds, and in general just talking out of both sides of their mouths to win which means, they won't accomplish either one because they're positions are diametrically opposed.

So why are we electing these people? Sound bites. This means we live and vote off the latest crafted sound bite, because we don't really know the candidates and sound bites are all most voters have to go on. At least that was then, but this is now, and now I believe Republicans are waking up and realizing that we can't do that any more.

Another problem is the social values segment of our party that wants to elect candidates who oppose abortions for girls and women and are against same sex marriage. This brings out a group of candidates who frankly may not be the right ones to represent our districts and states, let alone our entire nation in Congress or in the White House.

Republicans need to work on reminding themselves if they knew or learn if they didn't, that Republicans follow the doctrine of "Laissez-faire", which means leave the people alone. Generally, our legislative bodies are there primarily to govern the government not the private lives of citizens. The role of government for the most part is not to govern what you eat, what you smoke, what you drink, who you sleep with or when you breed. These are personal choices, as much a part of the natural inherent rights of a free individual as there is.

Anyway, it's something all Republicans need to think about and hopefully fix so in the 2016 elections we elect people who want to leave the American people alone and get the people who aren't supposed to be here out of the country, so we can actually pursue balancing the budget, reducing spending, stopping debt growth, reducing poverty and unemployment, and save our nation for the benefit of the American people and our posterity.

Judy, I truly love you, even tho I have never laid eyes on you or spoken to you. I love you like one love a cherished neighbor. However you closed your last offering here with "hopefully fix in the 2016 elections....." Judy, I have heard that line since the 1992 elections. I am sorry to report that that bucket of political hogwash does not hold water anymore and strategy for America must change. As I've been attempting to alert about here, we are out of time for more elections to solve this! Four administrations and 12 Congresses have convinced me that the executive and legislative branches of government are very pleased with what this is doing, or in their pea pickin' minds accomplishing.

Perhaps I am missing the point here but we do have problems right here in the nation right now. We have the illegal aliens already raping, robbing and killing American citizens. Yes, we should worry about ISIS coming here for sure but there is a whole world of danger coming in per the illegal aliens. It is far overdue for us to remove all of them and call them what they are as well, domestic terrorists. They come here breaking our laws the minute their feet hit our ground and their family members harm our family members. This country is so screwed up behind our government and its elected officials it is not even speakable. In my American heart I wait for the fight I see coming with their betrayal of our nation and its legal population. Just remember to get me when that time comes, I am not so tired that I will not join you. Where is our Brave Heart who will lead us into the necessary battle on the horizon and it is coming??? I am tired of seeing illegals everywhere I look, it is driving me crazy!!!

I think it is time to get a gun, it is too dangerous to live in this country without one any more, not like before where a person could feel safe. We are no longer safe when our own government no longer protects us against this type of dangerous people and families. Illegal is illegal period and the illegal aliens do not care how we get hurt as long as they get want they want, our jobs, our wages, our homes, our nation to boot. They even kill U.S. citizens while are officials turn away with blind eyes. Yes it is time for me to buy a gun, my nation is forcing it on me. I do not even know what they cost but thank you constitution, the fore sight of our fore fathers, the first and second amendments which protect me even when my government no longer does. This country has ended any relationship we might have had with them when it comes to security when they have allowed our nation to be invaded as it has been to date and for not protecting us from these invaders. They have invited the enemy into our shared home with no thought to where we would be safe.

It is time we accept their indifference to our problems and ignore them as they ignore us in our plight. Let them sew what they have reaped for once!!! Let us take ourselves into a new day where we must protect ourselves because we cannot trust them to do so on our behalf after one betrayal after another and another, lies, all lies and it will continue until we no longer listen to them or hear their twisted words of deceit, their lies. I am sick to death of their lies.

They have killed my desire to believe, to trust, and to be naive or hopeful that their promises are meaningful because they are not. My naive and national belief they have killed with their lies and I hate them for having done it. They are so evil in their lack of concern for us, for our nation, even for our lives. I now understand why so many no longer vote especially behind that man who lives in our White House, that criminal. Oh that we actually call him out on his lies and deceit, oh who are we to dare it. Let me remind him and I hope you join me in it, we are the American citizen who you throw to the ground and walk over in your evil attempt to be our King, our Emperor, and it is you who should be afraid because we are the owners of this once great country you wish to destroy. I am sick of you and of what you are doing to my nation, your law breaking and evil criminal self, Obama, and yes I dare to say it, suck it up jerk.

I will never do any harm to another person in my life yet you do harm to a whole nation of individuals who no longer even wish to hear your horrible voice. I have no respect for anyone including you who breaks our laws, who sells us out for votes with the excuses of you made promises to the illegal aliens. What of your promises to us, your nation's citizens, right? But who are we that we would expect you to do the right thing by us over illegal aliens, who are we, you may ask. I know for a fact that I am not a criminal, yet a federal judge has told the nation that you have broken laws. Is that not the definition of a criminal, law breaking? You should be in jail as any criminal would be...so why aren't you is my question?

You should be impeached already but then this leads to the reason I no longer trust my government, this begs that question. Why have you not been Impeached, why have you been allowed to not only do us harm but even to continue to live in our White House. We, the American citizen, are not in your heart nor is this nation. Rudy was right all right, he surely is and do you even understand why he is right? Let me tell you why he is right because he does love American and he can see that you are not a kindle soul, you are not even close. So let me ask you now, where are your positive words of change, dead and gone are those words, long gone. I even knocked on doors for you and I feel so foolish for doing so now. I was naive then but you have burnt it out of my soul with your actions. You have drown your motto of hope and change in an ocean of deceit while you walk all over us in your attempt to grab like a monster for those illegal votes...

God Bless American, my home sweet home ! May God save us all.

Oh thank you so much, neighbor! And I totally agree with your frustrations. But now is no time to give up hope. I've been at this since 2005, ten years, you've been at it much longer. I'm one of those 250 million that didn't even know we had an illegal immigration problem until 2005 when I saw it here where I am now. And I only figured it out because I spent a lot of time researching the issue, blogged against in-state tuition for illegal aliens, and it was at that forum that William saw my posts and asked if I would like to be an activist with ALIPAC to help stop it.

I always hold out hope that eventually enough people will learn about the problem and with the information take action to stop it, and I think most Americans and the polls show 90% of Republicans now get it and realize the illegal immigration problem can no longer be tolerated and are ready to do what it takes to end this travesty. It may take a couple of more elections, but I truly believe Americans who often come to the party late so to speak, will come to this one and do what is necessary to end this problem in America.

Another thing about Real Republicans, we actually have no affinity for politics and no affection for government so that makes it harder for our political party to have good candidates, because most of the people who would be good candidates and good leaders have no interest in being part of the political scene. They have other interests and obligations, are too busy with work, business, careers, family, making ends meet and other engagements, and just hope someone else will do it.

It's the same reason most Hollywood Stars are Democrats and very few are Republicans. Republicans by their nature don't really like the limelight, are more private-oriented, have no interest in the private lives of other people, and likewise don't want their privacy invaded. But, when you're in politics, your life is an open book, which doesn't appeal to most Republicans. So, we have a hard time getting good candidates to run, even though we have many truly wonderful people in our party who would make excellent leaders and representatives.

I think we're all in agreement that the problem will have to be solved by Republicans. That is a given, so we must unite, hold the line, stand our ground and reject any candidate for any office who talks the pro-immigration and more free trade mantra lies. From from here on, there can be no exceptions, no excuses and no compromises with respect to the illegal immigration issue.

This is the number one issue of the 2016 races and it will be up to the Republicans we elect to stop this madness once and for all. To do it legislatively, we need six more seats in the Senate plus a President who has common sense, intelligence and an unwavering loyalty to American citizens. Who would have thought this would be so difficult to achieve?

Well, now, today, 2015, we all know the problem, 90% of Republicans agree it must be stopped, and we have the support of the vast majority of all voters to get this done, so I hope that not only will 2016 bring in the people who will bring an end to illegal immigration and excess immigration, but pass the FairTax as well so we can not only lift the burden of illegal immigration from the shoulders of our fellow citizens, but fix the economy by setting everyone free to do whatever they want to do with all their income, wages, salaries and earnings in their pockets, free from the manipulations of the income tax system, and let the good times roll for everyone except illegal aliens who do not fare well under the FairTax, one of the many reasons I adore this new tax system.

Freedom, hope and work (when we can find it), are really all we have, but wow, what a Trifecta! Lets put it all to use and knock it out of the park in 2016. And that means NO JEB, NO CHRIS, NO MARCO, NO LINDSEY, NO PAUL, NO PERRY, or any other crackpot who thinks amnesty is an "act of love" when it's an act of hate against US citizens, or that we can't deport 20 million illegal aliens when it's an irrefutable fact that our states and local law enforcement officers can deport 20 million illegal aliens in a year or less. They could actually do it in a weekend, but lets not rush them.

800,000 state and local law enforcement officers x 2 illegal alien arrests/deportations per month per officer = 1,600,000 illegal aliens per month x 12 months = 19,200,000 + 1 month of 3 illegal aliens per officer + 800,000 = 20,000,000 illegal aliens be gone!

It really is that simple. 6 more Senate seats, 1 loyal President, and a simple one sentence bill that acknowledges and authorizes states rights to enforce US immigration law.
