MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) -
There is a new reason opponents to the state's immigration law say it goes too far. The Southern Poverty Law Center says five people whose children were born in the U.S. are being denied food stamps because of Alabama's immigration law.
Senator Scott Beason of Gardendale says, after checking with the state's DHR, he can find no cases where families or their children were denied food stamps, because of the immigration law.
"I'm not going to say it's totally fabricated. I've learned over the past year dealing with the anti-immigration law that a lot of people will say a lot of things that are not necessarily factual," said Beason.
"Sadly, no one could make up the heartbreaking things we see people dealing with every day as a result of Senator Beason's disastrous law," said Mary Bauer, the Legal Director of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Senator Beason says Alabama's immigration law does not deny food stamps to children who were born in the United States.
