Mayoral candidates: Houston not a sanctuary city

Mayoral candidates: Houston not a sanctuary city

    By RUSTY GRAHAM
    Updated: 07.09.09

Houston’s mayoral candidates agree that Houston is not a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants and that limited local police resources should not be used to enforce federal immigration laws.

Houston also needs a coordinated regional approach to flooding and drainage issues, and needs to find a balance between development and quality of life.

That’s what a sparse but interested crowd heard Tuesday at Spring Woods High School, where the four candidates for Houston mayor address selected issues.

Peter Brown, Gene Locke, Roy Morales and Annise Parker each had three minutes to offer their views on:

    flooding and drainage

    crime and police

    economic development

    illegal immigration

    affordable multifamily housing

Sponsored by the Binglewood Civic Club and moderated by Chris Hajovski, the forum was designed to set up an issue with some background, then pose specific questions about that issue.

Of eight possible topics, five were addressed at the forum. While the selected issues are Houston issues, each has particular relevance to the Spring Branch area.

There was some difference in the details, but the candidates generally agreed that Houston should pursue a more regional approach to flooding and drainage, better intelligence for fighting crime, more responsible development, using police resources to fight crime rather than enforce immigration, and that subsidized housing complexes should be audited and regulations enforced.

The sanctuary question was prefaced with graphs and an overlay map that showed an average 7 percent increase in ESL programs in Spring Branch ISD schools north of I-10.

Brown acknowledged that the issue of sanctuary city is a complex one, but that Houston needs to enforce its own laws. He also said that children, even of illegal immigrants, should “be in school, not on the streets.â€

If they ignore the problem with the ILLEGALS long enough I'm sure it will be solved via magic; but the Elitist Politicians will continue their Sanctuary City Policy until the FEDS get around to Enforcing our Immigration Laws; of course during their thoughtful reflection many more Citizens and Police Officers will be MURDERED by ILLEGALS!

Well, if Houston is not a sanctuary city now, it will be by the time these clowns get done with it! Besides these idiots do not want to piss off the illegal aliens who might vote for them!

as long as you THINK that houston is not a sanctuary city for illegal aliens, you will never get my vote. Its been proven over and over again that houston IS A SANCTUARY CITY. you dont want to deal with the fact because you would make people mad,. but you know what, there are legal hispanics in houston who do want immigration laws enforced. so what if you make companies that hire illegals mad, THEY wont help you get elected, its the general population that does that.
Five dead houston police officers dead in the past 3 years at the hands of people in the US illegally and you still want to think there is no problem? you still want to think houston is not a sanctuary city?? your dumber than i thought

THANKS for posting this! You know Roy Morales was hawking votes at both TEA Parties and the Pelosi protest here in Houston. I had a chance to talk to him and asked directly what are you going to end Houston's sanctuary city status and stand behind all of these men and women here in blue (HPD)? He told me YES. Now he flip flops?

These four are no better than what we have. We need someone else to step up and run for Mayor of Houston. I am personally fed up with this passing the buck our local officials do. Blame the federal government or who ever you want but we elect local government officials to take care of local issues. The buck stops here in Houston with our Mayor, Chief of Police, and City Counsel.

GOT this in email from Roy Morales

Please let me know how you came to this conclusion. Have we met? Did you
hear me say this some where? When did I say it was not a problem? I think
you have confused me with someone else.

I saw Phil Gordon, mayor of Phoenix, on TV stating that Phoenix as not a sanctuary city. He's a joke. So is the chief of police Harris. I don't know where these people in power get the idea that if they just deny something it either does not exist or it will go away.

Do you think if I keep thinking "there are no illegals . . . there are no illegals . . . there are no illegals" they will go away?

How did half-way educated people get so dysfunctional when it comes to blatant statistics on the facts related to illegal immigration?

Okay, you are coming from the post office with mail including your latest package of heroin and get stopped by a cop at a checkpoint, whose drug-sniffing pup alerts to drugs. Car is searched, finding the package, and the cop has no right to arrest you as that kind of interstate shipping is against federal law and that is their problem? Give me a break!
If a law, whether federal, state or local, is on the books it is the duty of law enforcement to enforce them all. AARGH!
