GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Gunfire in Greenville led to a standoff with police on Saturday.

Nine men were arrested, and one of them is accused of shooting at officers.

The shooting started at about 3 a.m.

Police said someone called them to report the gunshots in the Vintage Apartment Complex off Pelham Road. When police got there, they said they found 28-year-old Armondo Bruno-Aguirre firing a gun into the air.

Police said, when they approached him, he fired two shots at the officers, ran into an apartment and slammed the door.

That began a standoff that lasted about an hour.

Police said eight other men were in the apartment with Bruno-Aguirre.

A SWAT team and negotiators were brought in, and an adjacent apartment was evacuated.

Finally, police said, one of the men inside opened the door, and all nine were arrested.

"The suspect received verbal commands from the officer to surrender," said Lt. Mike Madden, of the Greenville Police Department. "The suspect's response was to turn and to discharge at least two rounds in the direction of the officers."

Police said Bruno-Aguirre was charged, among other things, with five counts of assault with intent to kill.

The eight other men were each charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.

Police said the nine men are each from either Mexico or Guatemala, and their immigration status is under investigation.
