RI bishop wants US to halt mass immigration raids

RI bishop wants US to halt mass immigration raids

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island's Roman Catholic bishop is calling on U.S. authorities to halt mass immigration raids and says agents who refuse to participate in such raids on moral grounds deserve to be treated as conscientious objectors.
Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin asked for a blanket moratorium on immigration raids until the nation adopts comprehensive immigration reform. Tobin made the requests in a letter sent Tuesday to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Boston.

The letter was released Thursday to The Associated Press.

Tobin's action comes during a heated debate over illegal immigration in heavily Catholic Rhode Island. Authorities recently raided six courthouses looking for illegal immigrant maintenance workers and Gov. Don Carcieri, himself a Catholic, signed an order requiring police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation.

"We believe that raids on the immigrant community are unjust, unnecessary, and counterproductive," the bishop's letter says. It urges individual federal agents to consider the morality of their actions and refuse to participate if their conscience dictates.

In such cases, he said, "we urge the Federal Government to fully respect the well-founded principles of conscientious objection."

A spokeswoman for ICE, Paula Grenier, said she could not comment.

Roman Catholic and other religious leaders have repeatedly criticized immigration raids that

target migrant workers, rather than illegal immigrants who commit crimes.
Tobin's request is unusual because it suggests the raids are forcing immigration agents to choose between their jobs and their religious faith. It's not clear if any agents have objected to the raids.

Tobin is bishop of the Diocese of Providence, which covers the entire state. Some 60 percent of Rhode Island residents call themselves Roman Catholic, a higher percentage than any other state.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called U.S. immigration policies "morally unacceptable," saying they keep families divided and encourage the exploitation of migrants.

Thanks for posting the contact information. Since I'm Catholic, I sent the Bishop an email regarding this issue. I think his heart is in the right place, but not his brain.

As for political issues. The church never tells us whom to vote for, but I see nothing wrong with any church trying to influence political / social agendas.

Really . can't say i'm shocked since you are Catholic . To support their agenda on Illegal immigration i'ld say is pure Brain Washing on your part.
Our country is being run over by uneducated invaders demanding everything and changing "Our" school system on a daily basis . And you agree with the Churches saying "Call off ICE , let them ALL in ". Well i certainly don't agree with you . Your church has been a major pita on Illegal immigration since day one. Anything to fill the pews and get that lawsuit money back i guess

Will somebody give this priest confession on why he pardons criminals and betrays legal citizens by mixing up moral compassion with law enforcement?

i called and left a message bout this.
i said the radids were just, they were productive and they were necessary because these people are in the country illegally and dont have right to be here and should be sent back to their home country.
i also said how can you support illegal lawbreaking... then i said oh wait, you already did with the child abuse scandal from the 80s an 90s.
my final comment was to keep his mind on the business and problems of the church. NOT waht government does

    tencz57,

I don't support the Church's agenda on illegal immigration. That's why I sent the Bishop an email. He'll ignore it, but I informed him "he's wrong". I haven't heard much support for illegals from my own parish or my Bishop. I have no doubt it's there, but it certainly isn't vocal or visable.

I guess the brainwashing isn't complete.
