Mexican Armed Forces recover arsenal of machine guns from California SUV

Ensenada, Baja California —
Mexican soldiers stopped a California SUV carrying an arsenal of large caliber machine guns and rifles in Ensenada, the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional announced Monday.

The Armed Forces were carrying out a special operation based on what they said was an intelligence effort.

Members of Mexico’s 67th Infantry Battalion stopped a gold GMC with CA plates in the community of “El Rosario,” which is within the municipality in Ensenada, Baja California.

The Denali-style truck had six heavy-gauge machine guns inside, along with skilled cartridges, six tactical bibs, six AR-15-style rifles, 43 AR-15 loaders and 1,290 cartridges.

Authorities with the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) said the truck was stopped in a remote area between Ensenada and Punta Colonet, a poor, agricultural village about 140 miles south of Tijuana.

When Mexican soldiers attempted to stop the SUV, six people inside tried to run away, according to a news release from SEDENA. Two of them were caught and arrested,

“With these actions, the Armed Forces endorse our commitment to the people of Mexico,” the news release stated.

Soldiers said they arrested two adult men, but the other four passengers in the truck got away.

The agency said the guns and ammunition were secured and taken for disposal with the Attorney General of the Republic in the Plaza de Tijuana.

Authorities would not say whether the operation was part of the newly-formed National Guard, deployed to the region to tackle Baja California’s escalating drug violence.
Governor-elect Jaime Bonilla said Monday more than 300 elements of the National Guard were already deployed to areas of the state with high rates of crime. He said a total of 1,000 troops would eventually be deployed, specifically to tackle violence in the state.
