Minutemen Move Fight To Montgomery County
Group To Target Three Different Sites

After losing their fight to block a day laborer site in Herndon, Va., last year, the Minutemen are now focusing on Montgomery County.

The organizer of Montgomery County's Minutemen chapter, Chuck Floyd, said his group plans to videotape activities at three different day laborer sites throughout the county starting next month.

The sites are located in Wheaton, Silver Spring and Takoma Park. They are taxpayer-funded and run by CASA of Maryland. CASA is an organization that works to help immigrants find work.

An attorney for CASA of Maryland says the organization has tried to prepare everyone at its sites for the Minutemen.

"We've done training among the workers, so they're prepared for Minutemen. We know they're going to harass and intimidate us. The men have done nothing illegal. They're simply trying to earn living to support them and their families," attorney Steven Smitson said.

"I think what the Minutemen are trying to do is scare away employers and workers, and we're reaching out to employers to let them know who the Minutemen are and they're nothing to be afraid of," said Smitson.

Floyd said the aim of the Minutemen is to protect communities from illegal immigrants. But, many people believe immigrant workers are crucial to the local economy.
