Ortiz Wants More Agents Protecting Border

You've seen the images and now, so has congress - illegal immigrants are crossing our border - only to be let go. Most of them never to be seen again.

"How do we know these guys aren't possible terrorists? There's no way because we don't have any records."

In our investigation on a breakdown of border security, Action 4 News interviewed Congressman Solomon Ortiz, a valley representative, who has long warned of the danger that is present.

Sunday, we caught up with him in McAllen.

"I don't want to later on to say I told you so. Is it going to take another disaster for us to respond? We need to prepare ourselves and we're not doing that."

Ortiz was in the Valley over the weekend to take part in the mobilization ceremony for 700 Valley soldiers headed for Afghanistan.

Thursday Ortiz showed the Action 4 News report to a judiciary subcommittee on immigration and border security. He hopes the tapes will awaken awareness not just on the border, but throughout the United States.

"You should have seen the people of the committee. They had no idea," Ortiz said."

"They were shocked, they were surprised, they didn't know this was going on. And they said, 'I'm glad someone's bringing it to the front burner'."

Ortiz says he has already drawn up legislation to provide more manpower, more technology, and more detention centers on the border.

Now, he's asking the president to use an 85 billion dollar budget supplement meant to fund the war overseas to fund increased security - right here at home.

"We are supposed to be fighting a war in Iraq , so that we don't have to fight a war here."
If you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will give you trouble in the land where you will live.'

I want troops on the border AND employers in jail.

On second thought, the problem with the employers in jail bit is that with companies like Tysons, they just wind up having some low level managers take the fall, like happened about a year ago, and the big ducks go scott free. So we should hit the companies where it really hurts, something like $10,000/illegal/day fine. An example would be 10 illegals working ten days would cost them a million bucks.

Maybe THAT would get Don Tysons attention.
