Rubio calls on GOP to be 'pro-legal immigration'

By Catalina Camia, USA TODAY Updated 26m ago

Sen. Marco Rubio says the Republican Party has to overhaul its message on immigration and do more to reach out to Hispanics.

In an interview with Time magazine, the freshman senator from Florida and frequently mentioned vice presidential pick said his party needs to change its rhetoric and position itself as the "pro-legal immigration party."

"What's the Republican legal-*immigration plan? And that's a problem, when all they hear from you is what you're against and not what you're for," Rubio told Time, in excerpts posted online today ahead of a cover story.

Rubio, who is Cuban-American, said the GOP needs two things: "a common*sense, compassionate yet law-based response to people that are here without documents, and a robust legal-*immigration system that *emphasizes border security, worker security and an workable visa program."

Rubio's comments expand on some of the thoughts he shared at a Hispanic leadership conference in Miami last month, held before the Florida primary. They are similar to remarks made by former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who has said the GOP needs to win back Latinos who have "drifted away" from the party, in part over harsh rhetoric on immigration.

It is likely that immigration will be a topic at tonight's GOP presidential debate in Arizona. That state passed a law in 2010 requiring police to question the immigration status of people they detain when there is "reasonable suspicion" they are in the United States illegally.

and what do you mean by Pro Legal Immigration Rubio? Surely you don't mean increasing legal immigration levels beyond the current historic hyper LEGAL IMMIGRATION levels that are set unsustainable high at 1.6 million per year which is more than all other nations on earth combined!

My thought as well, what would satisfy the liberals and make them love us Mr Rubio, how many million would it take to buy love, simply won't work as America is struggling now with 310 million, what is the idea of uncontrolled immigration.
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

I heard someone say many of these big GOP personalities want higher fences with wider gates.

ALIPAC is going to speak out soon against these people ripping off our LEGAL IMMIGRATION mantra to try to escalate us beyond 1.6 million LEGAL immigrants per year.

Marco Rubio has stated he will become the 'First Latino President.' He is real thick buddies with Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee if that tells you anything.

The higher the fence and wider the gates the better the cheap labor funneling and padded greedy employer wallets and purses.

If the USA does need cheap labor it is unfair to the poor people of the world to give those coveted jobs to illegal aliens. Most illegal aliens are from Mexico--a wealthy country by world standards. Mexico has the world's highest child obesity rate and a net per capita income of $13K or so. How many Africans have starved to death waiting for permission to work in the USA legally while the jobs are done illegally by Mexicans? Most Africans earn less than $300 per year; it would be inhumane to give these jobs to Mexicans instead. If Africa is too far to import cheap labor then let Haitians, the poorest people in the Americas, take the jobs. They only make circa $350 per person per year. Allowing illegal aliens to stay instead of allowing emigration from the world's poorest countries would make the immigration system more inhumane and doom thousands of honest patient potential immigrants to death by starvation.
