12 Arrested After Two-Year Gang Investigation in High Point

    FOX8 Staff Writer

    6:11 p.m. EDT, July 6, 2011
    HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP)—

A two-year joint investigation of gang-related activity in North Carolina led to 12 arrests in High Point on Wednesday.

High Point Police alleged the suspects are ringleaders of a gang known as Sur-13 or Los Primos-13.

Some of those arrests were made on Northview Street in south High Point around 6 a.m. Law enforcement used a helicopter to aid them in the arrests.

"All I know is 6 this morning I was getting a knock on my door and it was four or five or six policemen," said Dawn Young, who lives on the block.

"I get up here and there's K-9 units, there's M-16s, assault rifles. I watch stuff like that on TV all the time, and I have never in my life seen anything like that," said James Cross, who works on the block.

Over the last few weeks, more than 40 arrests have been made in connection with the gang-related activity, which High Point Police said centers on drug trafficking.

Other charges range from rape to gun trafficking to driving with a revoked license. A few other arrests are expected to be made in the coming days or weeks, High Point police said.

The investigation involved the FBI, as well as state and local law enforcement agencies.

The FBI's Safe Street Task Force team based in the Triad helped make the arrests. Founded in 1992, the task force targets violent gangs and related violence.

There are other task force teams in Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte and Wilmington.

Among those arrested in High Point Wednesday include Saifur Rehman Khan, 23, and Jose Galvin Vazquez, 31. Vazquez is charged in a federal complaint with possession of a firearm by an illegal alien.

Khan is charged in a federal complaint with conspiring to sell a firearm to a convicted felon.

Several others, including one minor, were arrested Wednesday on state charges of obtaining property by false pretense, FBI officials said.
