SANTA ANA The Orange County "shot caller" of the Mexican Mafia was sentenced today to 168 months after pleading guilty to charges of running an elaborate gang enterprise accused of engaging in extortion, assault and drug trafficking.
Peter Ojeda, 64, of La Habra pleaded guilty in September to conspiring to violate federal racketeering laws and conspiring to distribute narcotics, according to federal prosecutors.
Ojeda is a member of the Mexican Mafia and a longtime Santa Ana street gang member. He is accused of running "the Ojeda Organization,'' which included high-ranking members of Hispanic street gangs, prosecutors said.
The organization demanded taxes from 15 to 20 gangs selling drugs, ordered assaults on those who failed to pay, and controlled drug trafficking in Orange County jails.
Ojeda's organization has been shuttered, with its 28 members having been arrested and charged, said federal prosecutor Doug McCormick.
Also today, the number three leader of the Ojeda's organization, Jose "Big Joe" Beccera, of Placentia, got 37 months in prison after pleading guilty to one charge of racketeering for helping Ojeda take a cut of the profits from street drug sales of Hispanic gangs.
Another defendant, Marco Diaz, 33, of Santa Ana, pleaded guilty to federal charges stemming from helping Ojeda's organization get money from Orange County street gangs, prosecutors said.
