ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Mexican man who was convicted of federal drug trafficking charges is being sentenced to more than six years in prison.

A federal judge sentenced 32-year-old Juan Ayvar-Lopez on Thursday afternoon in Albuquerque. Ayvar-Lopez will be deported after he completes his prison sentence.

Prosecutors say Ayvar-Lopez and his brother were arrested on methamphetamine and heroin trafficking charges by federal agents in May 2009. The arrests result from an investigation that was based on information from the Drug Enforcement Administration in Phoenix.

Court records show Ayvar-Lopez's name surfaced during a wiretap investigation. That allowed DEA agents in Albuquerque to intercept a load of drugs intended for him.

A search of his home turned up cash and drug ledgers.

His brother also pleaded guilty, but has not yet been sentenced.
