CA-Potential San Francisco Showdown Over Immigration

Potential San Francisco Showdown Over Immigration

    New York Times
    By JESSE McKINLEY
    November 10, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO — Setting up a potential showdown with the mayor, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors reinstated an ordinance on Tuesday requiring that juvenile offenders who are illegal immigrants be convicted of a crime before they are turned over to the federal immigration authorities.

The ordinance had been passed by the board in October but was quickly vetoed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, who said that it very likely conflicted with federal immigration law. On Tuesday, the board overrode that veto on an 8-to-3 vote.

But the mayor says that he has no intention of abiding by the board’s action and that the current policy of turning over juveniles at the time of their arrest would stay in place.

Dennis Herrera, asked the United States attorney’s office in San Francisco for assurances that city law enforcement authorities would not be prosecuted for violating federal law when the new law takes effect in early December.
    What was their answer?

    This sure seems odd.

Wasn't the mayor openly for aiding and abetting illegal aliens?

It is very odd....very. Mayor Newsom was all in favor of harboring illegals. Then after the Bologna murders (Edwin Ramos killed a father and his two sons) It was found out that Ramos was picked up not long before the murders for some other crime and they let him go. And Danielle Bologna is suing the City. Then it was found out that they had been giving tickets to some juvenile illegals to go home...but they would just return.

All of the sudden Newsome does a complete turnaround and now is not in favor of harboring illegals. He says its against federal law (as if it wasnt before). Just lately Newsome disappeared and supposedly went to Hawaii. He left without really saying he was going. He was suppose to make some speeches and they were all cancelled. He was suppose to be back like last Friday. I am not sure he came back. Meantime he decided not to run for Governor.

All this is really weird. There has to be something really big going on behind the scenes, because most of this makes no real sense. And it seems that the Board of Supervisors is still in favor of harboring illegals. What a mess.
