Mexican National with illness dies in El Paso hospital after Border Patrol apprehension
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - A sick Mexican National who was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents died Sunday in an El Paso hospital.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials released a news release on Tuesday about the death.
The man, described in his 40s, was picked up by agents on Sunday morning for illegal re-entry near the Bridge of the Americas.
Later that day he was evaluated by medical personnel at the Border Patrol processing facility near the Paso Del Norte Port of Entry. Agents then had the man transported to Las Palmas Medical Center after he was diagnosed with flu-like symptoms, liver failure and renal failure.
The man was given care at the hospital but died later that day.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and his loved ones," said Andrew Meehan, Assistant Commissioner for Public Affairs, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. "CBP remains committed to ensuring the safe, humane and dignified treatment of those within the care of our custody. Consistent with CBP policy, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility has initiated a review. The Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General and the Government of Mexico has been notified. At this time, CBP is not releasing the identity of the individual. CBP will release more details as available and appropriate, and will ensure an independent and thorough review of the circumstances.”
