Reuters recently
reported on Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s belief that President Joe Biden’s immigration policy is incentivizing not only a surge in illegal immigration but also drug cartel activity. The lack of focus on border security on the part of the Biden administration has served as a greenlight for cartels to ratchet up their drug trafficking operations.

According to Reuters, Mexico has suggested that the Biden administration start providing foreign aid to Central America, where the bulk of migrants heading northwards to the states hail from. They generally go through Mexico with the aim of landing in the U.S. and petitioning for asylum.

“They [migrants] see him as the migrant president, and so many feel they’re going to reach the United States,” stated AMLO after a virtual meeting he had with Biden. “We need to work together to regulate the flow, because this business can’t be tackled from one day to the next.”

Biden’s amnesty plan has worried the Mexican government, which it believes could serve as a magnet for further migration.

Based on intelligence that the Mexican government has gathered, Mexican cartels, gangs, and other criminal bodies have paid close attention to U.S. policies in order to gauge the viability of their smuggling efforts. This is in line with many forms of speculation from Border Patrol agents who contend that talks of amnesty and similar legislation tend to spur more activity at the border.

One Mexican official, who maintained anonymity, said to Reuters that cartels have employed sophisticated smuggling methods “from the day Biden took office.” According to Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge, cartels are “using technology to thwart authorities, making smuggling operations appear as travel agencies, and keeping migrants up to date on the latest immigration rules.”

“Migrants have become a commodity,” the official said to Reuters. “But if a packet of drugs is lost in the sea, it’s gone. If migrants are lost, it’s human beings we’re talking about.”

In many respects, Mexico has
politically imploded and given its proximity, presents a unique danger to the U.S. largely because of the cartel activity that operates with relative impunity throughout Mexico.

America must get serious about immigration, lest it wants a crisis of epic proportions hitting it in the face.
