Mexican president decries 'growing harassment' of migrants in U.S.
By Mark Stevenson | Associated Press
    4:05 PM CST, November 14, 2007

MEXICO CITY - President Felipe Calderon decried Wednesday what he called "the growing harassment" of Mexicans in the United States and said his government will work to counter it by funding a media campaign to show migrant success stories.

Mexican officials have expressed concern over a recent wave of immigration raids and a U.S. political climate perceived as anti-migrant. Calderon said U.S. presidential candidates were using migrants as "symbolic hostages" on the immigration issue.

"I am especially worried about the growing harassment and frank persecution of Mexicans in the United States in recent days," Calderon said at a meeting of the Mexican government's migrant assistance agency.

He called on leading U.S. presidential candidates to "stop holding Mexicans in their country as symbolic hostages in their speeches and (campaign) strategies." He was apparently referring to the hard line some candidates have taken on the immigration issue, and other candidates' unwillingness to take a clear stance in the debate.

To bolster the image of migrants in the U.S., the Mexican government will launch "direct media campaigns aimed at showing migrant success stories and raise awareness of the many contributions" migrants make to U.S. society, he said.

Calderon noted 6 million of the 11 million Mexican migrants in the United States are undocumented, and endorsed the creation of what he called the League Against Discrimination Against Mexicans in the United States.

Pablo Alonso Flores, a member of advisory council of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad, described the new anti-discrimination league as a group "run by Mexican-Americans, aimed mainly at defending our rights peacefully and respectfully, while not allowing media attacks on the integrity, roots and customs of Mexicans."

Calderon also endorsed a project to expand shelters for deported migrants in Mexican border cities.

Several recent high-profile immigration enforcement raids, and political setbacks like Wednesday's decision by New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer to abandon a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, have put immigrant activists in a grim mood.

Also Wednesday, Mexico City officials announced a program to offer city residents living in the United States low fees for sending money home.

As part of the program, the estimated 600,000 Mexico City migrants will also receive free life insurance policies. If they die, the policy will enable their relatives in Mexico to repatriate their remains free of charge.

Has anyone ever had the misfortune of being harassed in Mexico? Many years ago it happened to me, they demanded a payoff to let me get on a train. Like I said many years ago. You couldn't pay me to step foot in there today. What a joke. They must be worried. Why aren't we taxing the money wired to Mexico. That could offset their medical bills.

    http://www.illegalaliens.us/crime.htm

This Article was writen in 2004 although I would suggest that crime has gotten worse. I am using this as an counter point to what this corrupt Mexican President is trying to imply.. that his citizens are the cream of the crop

    The Illegal-Alien Crime Wave
    Heather Mac Donald

Some of the most violent criminals at large today are illegal aliens. Yet in cities where the crime these aliens commit is highest, the police cannot use the most obvious tool to apprehend them: their immigration status. In Los Angeles, for example, dozens of members of a ruthless Salvadoran prison gang have sneaked back into town after having been deported for such crimes as murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and drug trafficking. Police officers know who they are and know that their mere presence in the country is a felony. Yet should a cop arrest an illegal gangbanger for felonious reentry, it is he who will be treated as a criminal, for violating the LAPD’s rule against enforcing immigration law.

The LAPD’s ban on immigration enforcement mirrors bans in immigrant-saturated cities around the country, from New York and Chicago to San Diego, Austin, and Houston. These “sanctuary policiesâ€

Illegal Aliens More Likely to Commit Crimes: Study

People who violate immigration laws are more likely to violate other laws, according to an immigration reform group that said the findings differ from previous studies showing that immigrants to the United States commit fewer crimes.

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) said these previous studies - especially one last month by the Immigration Policy Center (IPC) - "are misleading because they lump legal and illegal immigrants together."

"The use of that [U.S. Census Bureau] data is virtually guaranteed to demonstrate a lower incidence of criminal activity because of the screening process to which legal immigrants and long-term foreign residents are subjected," Jack Martin, special projects director for FAIR, told Cybercast News Service.

Martin noted that legal immigrants are required to submit police reports and records of any criminal convictions that could exclude them from being issued a U.S. visa. Furthermore, non-immigrants planning to visit the U.S. and applying for a visa are also required to disclose any past criminal activity on their part.

    Story Continues Below

"Our immigration law has a large number of exclusions covering previous criminal activity intended to protect the American public from possible future crime," he said.

FAIR said that "deportable aliens nationwide were nearly twice as likely to be incarcerated for crimes as their share of the population." The group adds that there is "mounting evidence that illegal immigration is directly linked to violent crime in this country."

"IPC, which is part of the network of advocacy groups lobbying for an illegal alien amnesty, is clearly fudging the facts to advance their political objectives," charged Dan Stein, president of FAIR.

"Local law enforcement authorities are correct to be concerned about growing populations of illegal residents because, on average, they are more likely to commit crimes," he said.

"Our failure to control illegal immigration poses a real and documentable risk to the security of the American people," Stein added. "Innocent Americans are often victims of personal and property crimes committed by illegal aliens."

IPC Director Benjamin Johnson defended the group's study and its use of Census Bureau data.

"We didn't distinguish between legal and illegal [immigrants], but we didn't exclude illegal aliens, or undocumented immigrants, in the study. They're in the data analysis as well," he said.

"The findings in our study are consistent with the findings of studies looking at this issue for the last 100 years," Johnson argued. "This is not new information. It is simply a reality that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes."

Turning the criticism around, Johnson took issue with the data FAIR uses from the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). State authorities use the program to request reimbursement from the federal government for the money spent on detaining illegal immigrants.

"There are two problems with that data, and therefore two problems with FAIR's report," he said.

"Their data talks about days of incarceration," said Johnson. "The problem is we know that many of the same immigrants are picked up two or three times, so the problem with the data is that it counts the same person multiple times. It doesn't sort out whether those days reflect different people or the same people."

The second problem, he said, was the fact that much of the detentions for which the federal government is reimbursing states relate to people who may be deportable for status violations but "have not committed a crime."

"Many people never committed any crime," Johnson asserted. "It's an administrative violation. You have to think of it in terms of tax law - not everybody who makes a mistake on their taxes is guilty of the crime of tax evasion."

Martin defended FAIR's use of SCAAP figures, saying it was "the only data that offers a useful look at illegal status."

Excuse me but, Calderon wants us to stop holding Mexicans in their country as hostages???
What does he mean by that? Does he think Mexico owns the USA?
This is not their country, they are not citizens and by the laws of our land we can deport them. They have no rights here other than to be treated well while in custody.
    His words scare me!

Oh so NOW you are concerned about your northern "citizens"?
Funny how when the money submittances are threatened, Calderon is now worried.

Here it is folks, in a round about way, the admittance of the mexican government's dependancy on the money coming south.

Make no mistake about it, the money sent home by illegals is their 2nd largest contributor next to oil, to the mexican GDP.
