Mexican national sentenced in Wisconsin to 3½ years in federal prison for illegally re-entering US

MADISON, Wis. — A previously deported convicted criminal from Mexico was sentenced Monday to 3 ½ years in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States.

This sentence was announced John W. Vaudreuil, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin. This sentence resulted from an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO).

Ramiro Varela-Garcia, 38, a Mexican national who was living in Cambridge, Wisconsin, was sentenced March 16 by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 42 months in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States after having been deported, which is a felony. Varela-Garcia pleaded guilty to this charge Dec. 19, 2014.

Varela-Garcia was previously deported to Mexico Nov. 12, 2004, following his criminal convictions for second-degree sexual assault of a child and criminal sexual assault.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman, Western District of Wisconsin, prosecuted this case.

Jailing a convicted sex offender makes sense. What would make even more sense is telling the Mexican government that trade with us is contingent on their keeping their perverts at home.
