Just got this from a local news station. This idea has potential.
S.C. Sheriffs Support Illegal Immigrant Jails
POSTED: 6:10 am EDT April 21, 2008
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- South Carolina sheriffs back a plan to build three regional prisons in the state to hold illegal immigrants as they await deportation.
Several sheriffs told The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News that the plan calls for the three prisons to hold up to 400 inmates each.
State prison officials would run the facilities, which would be operated with money from a federal Department of Homeland Security program.
It hasn't been determined who would pay to build the prisons, and officials stress the plan is a work in progress.
Advocates for the poor said they worry concentrating illegal immigrants in a few jails may lead to substandard care in those facilities.
