Valley legislator seeks study on bilingual zones

A local lawmaker has drafted legislation to evaluate the effect that designated “bilingual zones” would have on compelling local and state governments to conduct official business in both English and Spanish.

The creator of the legislation, District 40 State Democratic Representative Terry Canales, indicated that the Rio Grande Valley would be one of the areas to be designated as one of the proposed bilingual zones.

According to legislation filed under House Bill 2678, The B3 Institute at UTRGV, the secretary of state and the comptroller of public accounts would collaborate on an inquiry to assess the impact of forming such zones in select areas of Texas.

The bill calls for both English and Spanish to be regarded as official languages in the proposed bilingual zones. Citizens residing in those zones would be entitled to receive local and state government services in both languages. They also would have the option of their preferred language of choice when being heard before the state court system.

In addition to government entities conducting business with residents in both languages, Canales wants to implement road signs in both Spanish and English.

In a recent interview, Canales spoke about his motivation for creating the legislation. He was inspired after witnessing the marketing strategy by UTRGV to be known as a bilingual, bicultural and binational university that incorporates Spanish and English into its curriculum and campus activities.

“Like it or not, the majority of people here in the Rio Grande Valley, their first or primary language is Spanish. My legislation seeks to embrace that culture and to say, ‘This is a bicultural, bilingual zone, where our traffic signs and public announcements are done in both English and Spanish,’” Canales said.

This guy has got to be crazy. I hope this legislation doesn't pass. We need one common language, which is English. If they want to live in the U.S., learn English. That's what my ancestors did. We need one language so everyone can communicate.

Texas is a sanctuary state - has been from the beginning.

As Texans,we should all hang our heads in shame at what we have allowed politicians to do to our states. Of course, Washington has been running Texas since George Bush was governor.

There was a small town in South Texas (can't remember the name) where all official documents were in Spanish only.

This is America - we speak English! Take your globalists open border approach somewhere else - we want the illegals out yesterday - we are not planning on accommodating them tomorrow? Me thinks this guy is part of the reconquista to take back the land mexico lost in a war and was paid a good price for in compensation. Give them California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, certainly looks like they are achieving their goal w/o a sword or rifle raised thru their "exploding with babies" on our taxpayers and made "spanish speaking" zones with this jerks pronouncement. Actually would be discrimination against Americans as we speak ENGLISH.

In parts of Texas, you would not know you are in America.

Our youngest grandson (4 years old) was staying with us for a while some years ago. Our son worked in Dallas, so we were going to take the grandson to meet up with our son and to return home.

We got lost on the way and went through a part of Dallas that looked, smelled and sounded like Mexico. Our grandson quietly sat in his car seat taking it all in - finally he said,

"Grumpy, this is NOT the way to my home."

It certainly didn't look like it.
