Mexico announces aid options for Central American migrants

Mexico announces aid options for Central American migrants

    0

AFP26 Oct 20181Mexico City (AFP) – Mexico on Friday announced it will offer Central American migrants medical care, education for their children and access to temporary jobs as long as they stay in two southern states.

The plan was the first broad and detailed bid to address concerns of the flood of migrants, mostly from Honduras, who — facing deadly violence and desperation at home — set out in caravans for the United States.

President Enrique Pena Nieto announced the “make yourself at home” plan that migrants who agree to remain in Chiapas and Oaxaca states can “receive medical care and even send your children to school,” according to a video posted on Twitter.

Migrants who want to take up his offer must file paperwork with the National Institute of Migration.

“This plan is only for those who comply with Mexican laws and is a first step towards a permanent solution for those who have refugee status in Mexico,” Pena Nieto said.

A caravan with some 7,000 Central Americans is traveling through southern Mexico and many are determined to reach the United States — despite warnings from US President Donald Trump, who says they will be turned back.

The Latest: Caravan migrants reject Mexico plan on refuge

Migrants walk past an abandoned baby stroller, as a caravan of Central American migrants slowly makes its way toward the U.S. border, between Pijijiapan and Arriaga, Mexico, Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. The caravan set out for its most ambitious single-day trek since the migrants crossed into the southern Mexican state of Chiapas a week ago, a 60-mile (100-kilometer) hike up the coast from Pijijiapan to the town of Arriaga. Keep them all in Mexico and send their families that are here to them!

Put them to work cleaning up Mexico, building resorts, building housing developments, build RV resorts, open restaurants, open businesses!

They can make pottery, art, clothes, music. If we can build and make our country successful...so can they.

Let George Soros put his funds in Mexico and build a booming economy.

They can build America on their soil.

These people need to be rejected by all countries and sent back to their home countries at their own expense. If they can walk up here or hitch rides, then they can walk or hitch rides the other direction back home. Every nation in our hemisphere who wants aid or trade with the United States has to condemn this illegal un-permitted migration and use force to stop it at their borders.

Migrant caravan members reject offer to stay in Mexico: "No, we're heading north!"

Central American migrantsARRIAGA, Mexico -- Several thousand Central American migrants turned down a Mexican offer of benefits if they applied for refugee status and stayed in the country's two southernmost states, vowing to set out before dawn Saturday to continue their long trek toward the U.S. border.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced what he called the "You are at home" plan, offering shelter, medical attention, schooling and jobs to Central Americans in Chiapas and Oaxaca states if they applied, calling it a first step toward permanent refugee status. Authorities said more than 1,700 had already applied for refugee status.

But after one of the caravan's longest days of walking and hanging from passing trucks, the bulk of the migrants were boisterous Friday evening in their refusal to accept anything less than safe passage to the U.S. border.

"Thank you!" they yelled as they voted to reject the offer in a show of hands in the town of Arriaga. They then added: "No, we're heading north!"

Sitting at the edge of the edge of the town square, 58-year-old Oscar Sosa of San Pedro Sula, Honduras concurred.

"Our goal is not to remain in Mexico," Sosa said. "Our goal is to make it to the (U.S). We want passage, that's all."

Still 1,000 miles from the nearest U.S. border crossing at McAllen, Texas, the journey could be twice as long if the group heads for the Tijuana-San Diego frontier, as another caravan did earlier this year. Only about 200 in that group made it to the border.

While such migrant caravans have taken place regularly over the years, passing largely unnoticed, they have received widespread attention this year after fierce opposition from U.S. President Donald Trump. He has publicly voiced his frustration over the caravan, and his administration is now considering a wide range of administrative, legal and legislative options.

He tweeted a message to the migrants Thursday: "Go back to your country and if you want, apply for citizenship like millions of others are doing!"

Stoking fears about the caravan and illegal immigration to rally his Republican base, the president has insinuated that gang members and "Middle Easterners" are mixed in the group, though he later acknowledged there was no proof of that.

If the group reaches the border, they are likely to encounter one of two outcomes: Sluggish bureaucracy or hard-line enforcement.

On Friday, the Pentagon approved a request for additional troops at the southern border, likely to total several hundred, to help the U.S. Border Patrol as Mr. Trump seeks to transform concerns about immigration and the caravan into electoral gains in the Nov. 6 midterms.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis signed off on the request for help from the Department of Homeland Security and authorized the military staff to work out details such as the size, composition and estimated cost of the deployments, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press discuss planning that has not yet been publicly announced.

So much for 'refuge.' Caravan army turns up its nose at Mexico's generous offer of asylum

    By Monica Showalter
If there's anything that points to the political nature of the thousands-strong migrant caravan heading north to the U.S., it's the migrants' rejection of Mexico's generous offer of political asylum, along with jobs, medical care and big benefit packages. According to this Associated Press report, they'd rather confront Trump.

Migrants traveling in a caravan through southern Mexico have rejected a proposal by President Enrique Pena Nieto that they apply for refugee status in the country and obtain benefits.
Coordinators of the caravan read out the president’s plan called “You are at home.” Migrants shouted “Gracias!” but “No, we’re heading north!”
Activist Irineo Mujica of the Pueblo sin Fronteras group is supporting the migrants in the caravan. He told the group that 80 percent of those who apply for protective status would be rejected and deported.
    NBC reports:
Sitting at the edge of the edge of the town square, 58-year-old Oscar Sosa of San Pedro Sula, Honduras concurred.
"Our goal is not to remain in Mexico," Sosa said. "Our goal is to make it to the (U.S). We want passage, that's all."
There are signficantly mixed reports about that, suggesting the Mexican government isn't on all one page as to what they intend to do.

William LaJeunesse of Fox News reports that Mexican cops were commandeering trucks and buses to load the migrants up for travel north, while NBC News reports that Mexicans were picking off the smaller groups that have spun off from the original caravan mass and declaring them illegal. The smaller groups, by the way, have reportedly spun off because of the presence of so many criminals and gang members in the ranks of the larger group, with LaJeunesse reporting that the invading army has fallen from 7,000 to 4,000. The pickoffs, however, seem to be followed by calls from the far-left caravan organizers to stay with the larger group, which just happens to support their original political aim of using of the caravan of large numbers to confront Trump and render the U.S. border meaningless.

Either way, the Mexican government is not helping in the transport regard, but that looks more like weakness, and not wanting this to be a problem with the U.S. or themselves more than anything else.

The migrants, after all, have left a lot of trash, and many are stealing from shops to survive the journey. Here is a recent tweet about the trash:

    Paul Joseph Watson

    @PrisonPlanet

Mexican woman laments trash covered streets after migrant caravan passes through.

"The migrants left and left us the garbage. What a waste of food, when they said they don't even have enough to eat."

What's indisputable here is that weak as it is, and as concerned about its own security as it is, Mexico has issued a very, very generous offer to the migrants that they've turned up their noses at.

Which tells us one thing: That the migrant caravan isn't comprised of the sweet little daisies seeking asylum from violence that the press, the NGOs and the Catholic Church are portraying, but a group of hardcore pick-and-choose activists who will settle for nothing less than U.S. benefit packages, borders and U.S. rule of law, be damned. They want what they want, they want it for free and they want it on their own terms. They're political activists hellbent on teaching Trump a lesson and helping themselves to the U.S. taxpayer-paid goodies, not people fleeing violence and grateful for whatever they can get, the way real refugees, such as the fleeing Venezuelans, are. These mostly military-aged young men, often with criminal records, have a message to send, and they're happy to act as pawns for their NGO masters.

If that's not reason enough to halt them at the border, whether by troops or a wall, what is? These caravaners aren't who they say they are.

They come here and TRASH our country and steal from us too.

Mexico needs to load these ungrateful parasites up on a bus and send them back.

Trump...send in a convoy of buses to facilitate OPERATION RETURN TO SENDER!

I HOPE THE MEXICAN PEOPLE RISE UP AND RESENT THIS INVASION IN THEIR COUNTRY TOO!

NO ONE WANTS THEM! STOP GIVING THEM RIDES!
