MEXICO CITY - Mexico's government says soldiers have detained an operator for the Knights Templar drug cartel based in Michoacan state.

Federal security spokesman Eduardo Sanchez says Gregorio Abeja Linares faces organized crime, kidnapping and drug trafficking charges.

Sanchez said Monday that Abeja Linares was caught with two guns and an unspecified amount of cash.

The Attorney General's Office had offered a reward of 3 million pesos (about $225,000) for information leading to his arrest. The office said Abeja Linares employed corrupt police and a large number of informants.

Elsewhere, prosecutors in the northern state of Chihuahua say five men were shot to death in the mountain town of Guadalupe y Calvo. The town is in an area known for drug trafficking, and the killers used ammunition favoured by drug gang gunmen.
