Mexico is paying attention to the surge of illegal immigrants through its nation, recently deporting more than the United States and arresting 32% more than it did last year, according to a new report.
Likely reacting to the crisis and pressure from President Trump, Mexico City has made moves to curb illegal immigration from its southern neighbors, a campaign officials have promised to boost in a new deal with the White House.
According to data from Mexico and the Department of Homeland Security analyzed by the Pew Research Center, Mexico deported more illegal immigrants from the key countries of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala than Washington since 2014. Those three countries supply the bulk of illegal immigrants trying to cross into the U.S. from Mexico.

The data pulled together by Pew and released Wednesday said that Mexico deported 95,000 in fiscal year 2017 compared to 74,000 by the U.S.
In just the first six months of the current fiscal year, Mexico has deported 67,000. The numbers, said Pew: “5,000 Honduran nationals, 22,000 Guatemalans and 7,000 Salvadorans.
Together, the Northern Triangle nations account for 96% of all deportations from Mexico so far this year …”
The U.S. deported over 94,000 in fiscal 2018, according to Homeland Security statistics.
What’s more, Mexico has already been in the process of stepping up apprehending illegal immigrants from the so-called Northern Triangle countries. As Trump put pressure on the border after coming into office, Mexico has increased arrests 32% over last year, although the numbers are a fraction of those apprehended at the U.S. border.
