Mexico finds 116 bodies, new mass graves UPDATED
Mexico finds 13 more bodies, 2 new mass graves
Updated 12m ago |
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican investigators have uncovered 13 more bodies in mass graves in the violent northern state of Tamaulipas, where 59 dead were exhumed earlier this week, officials said Friday.
Seventy-two bodies have now been discovered since authorities began chasing reports that gunmen had kidnapped people off of passenger buses running to towns near the U.S. border.
Nine of the bodies were discovered in one newly found grave and four in another on Thursday in the area around the city of San Fernando, state Interior Secretary Morelos Canseco said Friday. The total now matches the number of migrants who died in a massacre near that town last August.
Canseco said investigators are searching for more graves in the area.
Federal authorities said Thursday they have detained 14 people in connection with the crimes.
State authorities said they started receiving reports in late March that gunmen were pulling men off buses on the stretch of road that runs through the municipality of San Fernando.
Relatives of people who have gone missing have begun showing up at a morgue in border city of Matamoros across from Brownsville, Texas, looking for loved ones — some not seen for a couple of weeks, others a few months, some as long as three years.
Authorities are still not sure about the origin of the victims found in the pits, but suspect at least some had been abducted from buses.

Authorities interviewing witnesses on the bus abductions calculated that from 65 to 82 people went missing, Tamaulipas state Interior Secretary Morelos Canseco said.
I got this off a story on the houston chronicle website.
If this is true based on this story and the other one where 59 were found,
it would be in the range of the 65-82 people that were missing.

More Bodies Found in Mass Graves in Mexico
Last Update: 1:06 pm
TAMAULIPAS, MEXICO - The numbers continue to rise. Mexican investigators say they have uncovered 13 more bodies in mass graves in Tamaulipas. That brings the number of bodies found up to 72.
Investigators say nine of the bodies were discovered in a newly found grave and four in another near San Fernando, about 80 miles south of Brownsville. Fourteen people are in custody in connection with the crime.
The bodies are being examined at a morgue in Matamoros. The first three identified victims are Mexican citizens.
Investigators say they found the bodies while chasing reports that gunmen were kidnapping people off passenger buses on a stretch of road that runs through San Fernando. That road is the same road where Valley missionary Nancy Davis and her husband came under attack.
The Davises were shot by suspected cartel gunmen in late January. Nancy Davis died. Her husband wasn't hurt.

16 more bodies found in Mexican pits, total now 88
Associated Press
Posted: 04/11/2011 10:04:23 AM MDT
MEXICO CITY (AP) - Authorities say a suspect in the kidnapping and killing of bus passengers near the U.S. border has led Mexican soldiers to another set of clandestine graves containing 16 corpses.
The latest discovery brings the total number of bodies found this month in a series of mass graves to 88.
Investigators are working to identify the bodies, one of which may belong to a missing U.S. citizen who authorities have said was on one of the buses.
The Mexican Defense Department said in a statement Sunday that the suspect told soldiers he had helped kidnap passengers on March 24 and March 29 in the northern state of Tamaulipas.
The statement said that he also confessed to killing and burying 43 people found in pits last week.

Guatemalan victim ID'd in Mexican corpse pits
By The Associated Press
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 7:59 a.m.
MEXICO CITY — The Guatemalan government says one of the first corpses from mass graves found in Mexico has been identified as a Guatemalan man.
The Guatemalan Foreign Ministry says the victim has been identified as Feliciano Tagual Ovalle, 44.
Mexican authorities had previously said most of the 88 bodies found in 14 pits were probably Mexican citizens.
The graves were found earlier this month in the township of San Fernando, near the U.S. border.
Investigators found the bodies of 72 migrants in the same area in August. Most were Central Americans, who frequently travel through the area to reach the United States.
In a statement Monday, the ministry called on Mexico to fully investigate the killings and punish those responsible.
