Mexico lifts criminal penalties for illegal immigrants

Mexico lifts criminal penalties for illegal immigrants

    July 21, 2008
    FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS

MEXICO CITY — Mexico will no longer jail illegal immigrants detained within its borders.

A measure that takes effect Tuesday eliminates jail times for illegal immigrants caught in Mexico. Most are crossing the country from Central America en route to the U.S.

Undocumented immigration will now be considered a minor offense, punishable by fines equal to US$100 to US$500. Illegal immigrants previously faced up to 10 years in prison, though most were simply deported.

Mexican legislators who backed the revision say Mexico’s previous penalties complicated efforts to lobby for better treatment of Mexican immigrants in the U.S.

Activists want more to be done to protect migrants in Mexico, where many are robbed and abused on their way north.

Not exactly. What mexico is refering to is they will no longer jail those who are found to be illegal in mexico. Those who have entered mexico illegally, across mexico's southern border will no longer be subject to jail time, or so they say.

This is nothing more than an attempt by mexico to put pressure on the Unites States for their illegals to receive more favorable treatment. Mexico realizes the hypocritical position they have put themselves in when they themselves jail illegals in their country.

Next, they will try to pressure the United States to adopt similiar policies for dealing with mexico's illegals in our country. This policy isn't about illegals in mexico. It's about mexican illegals in our country!

At the end of the day, we could care less what mexico does with those found to be in their country illegally. They have a right to enforce their borders as does the United States!!
