Pelosi Urges Catholic Church to Play 'Major Role' in Immigration Overhaul

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Catholic leaders Thursday that she wants them to "play a very major role" in getting their parishioners to support immigration overhaul.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Catholic leaders Thursday that she wants them to "play a very major role" in getting their parishioners to support immigration overhaul.

"The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me ... say, 'We want you to pass immigration reform,' and I said, I want you to speak about it from the pulpit," Pelosi, who is Catholic, said at the Nation's Catholic Community conference sponsored by Trinity Washington University and the National Catholic Reporter.

"Some (who) oppose immigration reform are sitting in those pews, and you have to tell them that this is a manifestation of our living the gospels," she said.

When FoxNews.com sought clarification from Pelosi's office, her spokesman issued this statement: "From health care to energy security to immigration reform, the speaker believes the faith community has played and will continue to play a critical role in our national debate."

After Arizona passed a controversial immigration law, Congress is debating broad new federal policies that could put millions of illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship. But lawmakers on both sides admit that passing a bill during this election year is highly unlikely.

The Arizona law, which is slated to take effect July 29, makes it a state crime to be in the U.S. illegally. And it directs police to question people about their immigration status when they may be in the country illegally and when they already are the subject of police contact.

That Progressive political organization that calls itself The Catholic Church, is so obvious that Nancy Piglosi knows she can use them politically to help get her Progressive agenda passed. The Catholic Church really needs to lose their tax exempt status in the U.S.

This is clearly in violation of church-state separation. Citizenship has nothing to do with spiritual issues or theology---but is strictly a political issue. But don't expect Americans United to say anything......They only go after conservatives.

There are a number of religious institutions, Christian and otherwise, that do not go along with placing such an orchestrated guilt trip on their followers.

Pelosi wants to tool the Catholic Church for her pet political project by her increasing pressure on its leadership. What she "wants" has no bearing on what the people want or deserve as security and preservation of their country.

She reminds me of a needy little fruitcake.

Shocked, Church officials are already salivating over the prospect of all those new contributions to Sundays collections. So there's no need for her to encourage them - which both she and they already know. This is just political theater whose goal is to play on the sympathy of Americans who still do not make the connection between depressed wages and illegals.

Pelosi, well she's already come to San Francisco and called illegals "patriots," so referencing the Gospels is not really a stretch for her. She's morally bankrupt. I wonder if she can even remember what it feels like to act on principle.

And of course the mainstream media avoid the relationship of illegals and unemployed Americans, so we have to do all the heavy lifting ourselves.

The local Catholic church here wanted us to send pre-addressed and pre-worded postcards to our Michigan representatives DEMANDING an end to immigration enforcement in any form. It brazenly pulled the "breaking up of families" card. BTW, how does the church expect to fill their coffers with money from these illegal aliens and their broods when all they do is breed, breed, breed, and take, take, take???

I've read several articles that state that parishoners do not support their priests and nuns desire for amnesty. If they continue to work on behalf of illegals, they need to immediately lose their tax exempt status.

I agree with you and this is being done by the Speaker of the House. I consider this a direct violation of her oath of office.
