Mexico slams Georgia migrant law
Rally against illegal immigration staged in Atlanta, Georgia
The issue has polarised opinion in the US
The Mexican government has condemned a tough new immigration law passed in the US state of Georgia on Monday.

Presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said the legislation discriminated against Mexicans and that diplomats would monitor how it was applied.

The law, which will take effect next year, prevents illegal immigrants from receiving many social services.

It will also require police and employers to report undocumented workers to the Immigration Service.

Complex issue

The signing of the legislation comes amid deadlock in the US Congress about how to deal with illegal immigration, as well as nationwide protests by worried Latino groups.

"The referred legislation incurs discriminatory acts against the Mexican population and those of Mexican origin," Mr Aguilar said.

"It is a partial measure that fails to resolve the complex phenomenon of immigration between Mexico and the United States in an integral manner."

Since becoming Mexico's president in 2000, Vicente Fox has been pressing for reforms that would allow more Mexicans to work legally in the US.

'Not anti-immigrant'

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, who signed the bill, said it was intended to ensure that everyone who lives in Georgia abides by the laws there.

"It is our responsibility to ensure that our famous Georgia hospitality is not abused, that our taxpayers are not taken advantage of and that our citizens are protected," Mr Perdue.

"I want to make this clear: we are not, Georgia's government is not, and this bill is not anti-immigrant," Gov Perdue said.

The law, which will take effect in July 2007, will also impose prison terms for human trafficking and limit the services commercial companies can provide to illegal immigrants.

BBC correspondents say the move has come at a difficult time in the US as there have been country-wide protests over a federal immigration law currently being debated in the Senate.

"It is a punitive bill," said the president of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Sara Gonzalez.

"This is a very complicated issue, and I don't see any good coming out of this."

There are an estimated 11 million undocumented workers in the US.

That this is even addressed by the Mexican Government --- UNBELIEVABLE!

At least Georgia has the right idea! More power to them! I hope that every state in the Union pulls the rug out from under our LAME Federal Government!~

I live in North Carolina,on the Outer Banks.The "Outer Banks" is a small place,the illegals can`t hide ,so they behave.But they still have "New Trucks" and a pocket full of "Food Stamps,and all of the Women have at least (1) child on the flight Line and one in the Hanger.
One company here has two flags in front of their business.One "Srtars and Stripes",One Mexican.The American flag is about to fall over.The Mexican Flag is standing strait up,in a proper position.

The Mexican Govt are the ones who kill, rob, rape and even torture South American immigrants. They even deport them faster than they can blink thier eyes. What nerve! Send them all home and there are no worries about how they get treated. Most of them are treated better than the real citazens of this country. What everyone fails to see is that when things don't go thier way...hollar discrimination. That will get you noticed...The real truth is, they send millions of dollars a week back to Mexico, Why wouldn't Foxx push to keep them here. Thier economy is booming!

I'm in GA, and I say God Bless Sen. Chip Rogers for his leadership in pushing this bill through the GA legislature. And a thanks to Gov. Perdue for doing the right thing and signing it.

Exactly US4US. North Carolina is already a well known and preferred destination for illegal parasite trash because they know the politicans here are filthy scumbags that will not enforce the laws and will look the other way when they commit crimes, freely roam city streets, or drive drunk undisturbed by officers of the law. If the makeup of the NC legislature is not overturned and soon, North Carolina will either buckle under the weight of illegal aliens and implode or explode in widespread civil unrest and street violence. However, if NC one-ups Georgia and imposes even more strict immigration enforcement and takes welfare and freebies away from illegal and ineligible aliens, then the state will cease to be a magnet for illegals and they will turn elsewhere. Hopefully every other state will one-up the other until illegal alien parasites either get the hell out of the US or stay home in their own countries.

The last time I contacted the governor's office and that of the Democrat legislature, their response was as it has always been: they are not aware of a "problem", they have no role in doing anything about the problem, or these illegals are entitled to whatever rights and benefits taxpaying citizens and legal immigrants are simply because "they are here" and can't be excluded which is a preposterous lie. What NC is dealing with is the same thing western and border states are dealing with, an entrenched pro-illegal alien political movement using deliberate misinterpretations of federal and state law, the state social welfare bureauracy, and racist race-based politics to push their repugnant and immoral agenda.

CaptainAmerica If they say they're not aware of a problem, take to the streets, get pictures flood with proof of a problem, and them ask them what they're going to do about it. Let them know that your not going away, and do it until they are sick of you. Show them pics and ask them how they can say there's not a problem when you've put it directly in thier faces!

I submitted a 'comprehensive' immigration proposal to the governor of Alabama, it was ignored. Though not from Georgia, I am VERY proud of y'alls governor and the state rep that took a stand for the citizens of the state. While the federal government is failing this country, too many state governments are failing their own citizens AND this country as well. I truly thought Governor Bob Riley was serious about fighting this illegal invasion, but unfortunately he's not.

Mamie I don't know how thick your roots are in Alabama, but Georgia would welcome you if you want to move! :) I live in the heart of what was a ton of illegals, but I have noticed when I'm out and about, I have been seeing fewer and fewer. I think they may be going to other states, or thier just hiding out hoping the Federal Gov't. will grant them amnesty, but I haven't seen no where near what I did before. I'm thinking the ones I'm seeing are legals, because they're not scared. It's actually been great!!! I guess most of them are too uneducated to know the law doesn't go into effect until next year!

You're probably seeing less illegals because they're moving to the surounding states. They might know it doesn't take affect til next year, but they're probably thinking if they leave now, they might have a choice on where to go.

I see where Birmingham was some of hub for illegal smuggling, but it would probably take a mass protests on the capitol for our governor to take a stand.
