MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities say they have formally launched extradition proceedings against an alleged cartel kingpin wanted by the United States for cocaine smuggling and murder.
The federal Attorney General's Office said Wednesday in a statement that Eduardo Arellano Felix will be sent to the high-security Altiplano prison west of Mexico City pending his possible extradition.
The 52-year-old Arellano Felix was arrested after a shootout Sunday in the border city of Tijuana.
Mexican authorities say he and his sister Enedina Arellano Felix took over the leadership of the Tijuana-based Arellano Felix cartel after several of their brothers were arrested or killed.

SAN DIEGO – Mexico has taken the first step in sending suspected drug trafficker Eduardo Arellano Felix, a top leader of the Tijuana-based drug cartel, to face trial in U.S. federal court in San Diego.
A federal judge in Mexico City on Wednesday issued a detention order for the 52-year-old Arellano based on the U.S. government's extradition request, according to a statement from the Mexican Attorney General's Office.
Arellano was arrested Saturday in Tijuana by Mexican federal agents acting on information from U.S. authorities. He is being held at the maximum security prison in Almoloya de Juarez outside Mexico City.
Before he can be sent to the United States, experts say Arellano first would have to face charges in Mexico, where he has been accused of illegal weapons possession and firing at federal officers.
