Mexico still has 150 jailed drug traffickers awaiting extradition to US

They got “Shorty,” but Mexican authorities are dragging their feet on the fate of another 150 jailed drug traffickers awaiting extradition to the United States, a federal source told The Post.

The new administration of leftist president Andres Manuel Lopez-Obrador is also doing little to seize the tens of millions of dollars in assets accumulated by Joaquin Guzman Loera, known as “El Chapo” or “Shorty,” the source said.

“They could care less about seizing El Chapo’s assets or the drugs that are still making their way into the US,” the source said, adding that Guzman’s Sinaloa cartel has gone beyond trafficking in marijuana and cocaine, and is now “heavy into meth and fentanyl,” which are being produced in Mexico and shipped around the world.

“The government of Mexico is only negotiating with the traffickers to end the violence and to continue to be paid” bribes, said the source. “They don’t want that gravy train to go away.”

El Chapo’s criminal enterprise is now divided into five factions, with two of the drug kingpin’s sons vying with an older brother Aureliano Guzman Loera, known by his underworld alias “El Guano,” which means bird droppings, for dominance.

El Guano, 64, is also known as “the Invisible One” because of his low profile. He is among the most ruthless members of the cartel, according to Mexican press reports. In 2016, he ordered the torture and execution of his half brother, Ernesto Guzman Hidalgo, the cartel’s head of South American operations and the father-in-law of Alfredo Beltran Leyva, the Sinaloa cartel’s biggest enemy. Known as “the desert ant,” Beltran Leyva, who headed up an eponymous cartel, is now serving a life sentence in federal prison in West Virginia.

El Guano is currently running operations in northern Mexico, Arizona and Texas, according to documents filed in US District Court in Arizona earlier this year.

Among the Mexican drug kingpins facing extradition for indictments against them in the US is Abigael Gonzalez Valencia, one of the heads of rival cartel Jalisco New Generation. His brother-in-law, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (alias “El Mencho”), is currently Mexico’s most wanted drug trafficker.
