On Thursday, Guillermo A. Alvarado-Ajcuc, 21, was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury for the murder of 29-year-old Garcia Mancilla, whose body was discovered in the parking lot of the Riverhead shopping center on Old Country Road earlier this month.

Alvarado-Ajcuc was arrested on May 16 and charged with murder as well as rape and confessed to the fatal attack, stating that he strangled Mancilla with his belt, according to Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Glenn Kutzrock.

During his initial court appearance, Alvarado-Ajcuc, a Guatemlan national, told Justice Allen Smith that he has been in the country illegally for the last four years.

Alvarado-Ajcuc is currently being held without bail at the Suffolk County Correctional facility. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

The victim’s mother, Marta Mansilla, recently told Newsday her daughter “was like a second mother” to her nieces and nephews and “had many friends and touched the lives of many people.”
