An illegal immigrant abandoned a 16-month-old baby in the desert after the baby began to cry.
Juan Cayetano Rosas, 23, of Puebla, Mexico, is being held by federal authorities.
The 33-year-old mother of the baby girl told agents that Rosas had been holding the baby east of Douglas as the group they were in crossed the border illegally into the United States.
The woman then told agents that Rosas and the baby girl avoided being caught by agents while the group was caught at about 10:20 p.m.
The woman, however, did not report her daughter missing until about four hours later.
Border Patrol agents along with ICE agents and Douglas police immediately launched a search for the child in the area where the group had been captured.
Agents also called a phone number in Agua Prieta that the smuggler had given the mother. An unidentified male answered the phone and told the agents the little girl was with Rosas on 10th Street and A Avenue. Agents arrested a man on 10th Street fitting that description.
At the Border Patrol station, Rosas told agents he had abandoned the little girl when she began to cry.
Border Patrol launched a search team and found her at about 4:30 a.m. She had crawled about 30 yards from where Rosas had left her. The child had minor scratches.
The mother and daughter were processed and reunited and returned to Mexico after they were processed by the Mexican Consulate.
Rosas is being held for possible prosecution for re-entry into the country.
