Proposed license plate states 'Hispanics discovered Florida'

Proposed license plate states 'Hispanics discovered Florida'

A license plate that touts "Hispanics Discovered Florida" may soon join the 109 specialty tags drivers can choose from.

The idea to celebrate the contributions of Hispanics came from National Hispanic Corporate Achievers, a Longwood group that sponsors minority job fairs. The plate would become a fundraising tool to support job and mentorship programs.

Danny Ramos, the group's president, said the tag's message is about cultural pride for Florida's 3.6 million Hispanics -- even if not all of Latin American or Spanish descent identify with the term.

WTF? N.C. plates will no longer carry profane abbreviation Video "Every community wants to be recognized for its contributions to society," Ramos said. "I think this is just part of our assimilation process and our acceptance in Florida."

A preliminary concept for the plate seeks to unify Hispanics by going back to their historical roots -- when Spaniards colonized the peninsula before the arrival of English-speaking settlers.

One concept features the image of a Spanish galleon and the date 1513 -- the year Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Len first landed in what is now Florida.

Some Florida tags already recognize racial and ethnic groups. One is dedicated to the memory of civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Others include American Indian tribes.

The Hispanic-tag proposal is being reviewed by Florida highway officials. It also has the support of state Sen. Gary Siplin, a Democrat in a district with many Hispanic residents.

Still they spread lies? In 1492 the following Indian tribes had already discovered Florida long before the Spanish came in 1513 and took it from them:

    Timucuans in the northeast
Apalachee and Pensacola in the northwest
    Tocobaga in the west-centra
    Calusa in the southwest
    Tequesta in the southeast
Jeaga, Jobe and Ais in the east-central

I find such a phrase on a Florida license plate bizarre and historically incorrect.

    1. I'm sure the American Indians of Florida are happy to hear and read that they were somehow "discovered", when in reality, the Indians, like the Seminoles, were already there BEFORE the Spaniards arrived.

    2. If I were American Indian, especially Seminole, I would think that such a license plate was an insult to Indian culture, and I would protest against such a license plate.

3 Hispanics: This is clever term that covers ALL people who speak Spanish and live in a Spanish culture.

    4. This Spanish culture covers such people as the Aztec, Mayan, and Inca Indians of Latin America, and it also covers children and grandchildren of black slaves brought to the new world by the Spaniards.

    5. My point is this: Hispanics did not "discover" Florida. Spaniards did.

    6. That is, many so-called Hispanics---like those hundreds of Mexicans of Aztec origin who sneak into the United States of America every night---have no connection whatsoever to the Spaniard "discovery" of Florida.

    7. So, again, Hispanics did not "discover" Florida. Spaniards were the ones who "discovered" Florida. That is a big difference.

    8. As I see it , to say that "Hispanics discovered Florida" is a distortion of history and a twisting of the facts of who really "discovered" Florida.

    9. So I say the following: The state of Florida should deny anyone from using the phrase "Hispanics discovered Florida."

    10. It would be like saying "Aztec and Mayan Indians discovered Florida", since most of the so-called Hispanics in the United States are of Aztec and Mayan Indian background.
