Mike Lee vs. S. 744 (And the ‘Banana Republic Quality’ of the Senate)

Mike Lee vs. S. 744 (And the ‘Banana Republic Quality’ of the Senate)

by The Blog on June 24, 2013 Print This Post
Senator Mike Lee of Utah makes his case against the Gang of Eight immigration plan… he does so because, unlike many, he has actually read it.
Fittingly, he calls it the “Obamacare” of immigration. “The “Gang of Eight” bill is not immigration reform,” says Lee. “It is big government dysfunction. It is an immigration Obamacare. All advocates of true immigration reform — on the left and the right — should oppose it.”
Late last week while the Senate was awaiting the Corker–Hoeven amendment to be released — which is set to be decided tonight at 5:30 — Senator Lee made the following cases against S. 744 and the “banana republic quality” of the United States Legislature.

“You’ve got to take every bit of it.”

    “Read the Bill”

Perhaps of all of the points Senator Lee makes, the testimony that his colleagues often vote on legislation they have never even read should be a case for all state governments to start thinking twice about federal laws. It is doubtful that Lee was trying to make an indirect case for state and local government nullification, but his statement — “I have been here when members have been asked to vote and did in fact vote enthusiastically, willingly and with hardly a whimper of objection to legislation that they had never seen, legislation that they were familiar with only to the extent that it had been summarized for them.” — shows us exactly why James Madison said that states are “in duty bound to interpose” when the federal government is out of line.

    He's right.

IMO--They should be made to take an in depth exam, including a written essay with detailed information on the text and subject matter of the legislation they will be voting on prior to the vote.
