LAREDO, TX .- The Consul Miguel Angel Isidro said that this is the most notable increase in the last three years. In 2009 there were 474 cases, in 2010 there were 473 and in 2011 the figure rose to 611.

"I think the desire to reunite families provoked more arrests of juveniles in the United States,” the official said.

Miguel Angel Isidro attributed the increase with the American dream in children and young adults who are seeking to cross into the United States to earn money and try to help their families in Mexico.

The Consul stated that there are more cases of deporting children to Mexico, but the staff of the National Institute of Migration in Nuevo Laredo captures them.

"The agreements we have with the U.S. authorities state that from Monday thru Friday and during office hours, we can direct the cases by the Consulate of Mexico," he said.

However, after hours and weekends, U.S. immigration agents must be given to children directly to officers of the National Institute of Migration, who then channel them to the authorities of DIF (an institute to help families).

The official pointed out that the agreements signed in 2009 between the Border Patrol, Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the consulates of Mexico in Laredo, San Antonio and Austin, have yielded excellent results, and meets the objective of efficiently safeguarding repatriated children.

He noted that U.S. authorities have cooperated and complied with the agreements in a comprehensive, understanding the importance of safe return of children to the territory of Mexico.
He said that in January alone there were 66 cases and 30% were children and young adults of Tamaulipas, then followed by Zacatecas, Queretaro, Guanajuato, the State of Mexico and Michoacan.
