Poll: Most illegal immigrants would take Z-visa
http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/stor ... feb02.html
As lawmakers struggle to agree on a bill to overhaul immigration, a new poll is revealing information about undocumented immigrants.
The survey is allegedly the first of its kind.
About 1,600 Latin-American immigrants responded to the poll conducted earlier this month.
The purpose was to find out whether people living here illegally would take advantage of the proposed Z-visa.
If immigration legislation makes it through Congress this time around, illegal immigrants may still have a shot at applying for the Z-visa.
The visa would allow people who came to the U.S. illegally to stay, live and work legally.
Eighty-three percent of those polled said they would apply for the visa. Of those, 94 percent said they would submit to a criminal background check.
Eighty-nine percent said they'd be able to provide proof they've been working in the U.S.
The Z-visa requires immigrants currently here illegally to pay $3,000 in fines for the head of the home and $2,000 for each additional family member.
Eighty-three percent of the immigrants polled said they would be willing to pay the fines.
Now, here's where it falls into a gray area.
Only 63 percent said they'd still apply for the visa if they had to return to their home country for a short while first.
Of those, 85 percent said they'd go back to their home country only if they were guaranteed they could return to the U.S.
The survey also questioned participants about more personal issues.
Seventy-eight percent believe anti-immigration sentiment is growing in the U.S.
Seventy-four percent say they do not have health insurance.
And despite the fact that most of the immigrants polled earn less than $20,000 a year, the majority rated both their economic situation and their quality of life in the U.S. as good or excellent."Ask not what your country can do for you --ask what you can do for your country" John F. Kennedy

Why are they polling illegals? They don't have a say in the legislative process because THEY ARE NOT CITIZENS!

I imagine they would! People on death row would take a pardon too, if offered.
