Minutemen say they held 9 for Border Patrol
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.22.2006

The civilian Minuteman Project captured nine people Saturday near Three Points and turned them over to the Border Patrol, a spokesman said.

They are accused of crossing the border illegally, said Stacey O'Connell, a spokesman for the Minuteman Project's "civil defense corps."
He said the Minuteman volunteers alerted the Border Patrol, and an agency helicopter and ground crew escorted the nine entrants away.

The volunteers, patrolling along Arizona 286 near Three Points on the first day of a monthlong effort, were located in an area southwest of Tucson less than 50 miles from the border with Mexico.

Border Patrol spokesman Jose Garza said he was unaware of the apprehensions, and said no incidents of violence were reported along the border Saturday.
