Huckabee: Hispanics Offer U.S. 'Second Chance'

Huckabee: Hispanics Offer U.S. 'Second Chance'

    Associated Press
    Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2006 11:06 a.m. EST

Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday the nation is being given a chance to make up for past racism by the way it handles the influx of Hispanics.

Huckabee, a Republican who is considering a run for president in 2008, said Arkansas has made progress on racial justice and has a fresh opportunity to do the right thing in the way it welcomes the growing Hispanic population.

"One of the great challenges facing us is that we do not commit the same mistakes with our growing Hispanic population that we did with African Americans 150 years ago and beyond. We're still paying the price for the pathetic manner in which this country handled that," Huckabee said at a meeting of the Political Animals Club in Little Rock. The club meets monthly to hear from political figures and experts.

"I think frankly the Lord is giving us a second chance to do better than we did before," Huckabee said.

Huckabee, who leaves office in January, spent about an hour talking about his 10 years in office. He offered no new insights on his future plans, still saying he will announce after he leaves office Jan. 9 whether he will run for president.

Huckabee said he is not posturing for the vice presidential nomination.

"If I make a decision at all, it won't be to run for the second position on the ticket. I've never seen a football team run out on the field and say we're Number Two," Huckabee said.

Huckabee afterward declined to elaborate on his comments on immigration. The governor in the past has opposed efforts to ban state services for illegal immigrants.

OH PLEASE SPARE ME. THE PERPETRATORS OF PAST RACISM ARE ALL DEAD AND BURIED AS ARE THEIR VICTIMS. WE HAVE NOTHING TO MAKE UP FOR...OR APOLOGIZE FOR. CURRENTLY THE LIONS SHARE OF RACISM IS BEING LODGED AGAINST WHITE AMERICANS.

Yeah, he's been on this kick for a while.

This argument simply illustrates how imbecilic Huckabee is-as if someone who believes the earth is six thousand years old can make himself look any more stupid.

    1. The situations are not analogous. Denying civil rights embedded in the U.S. Constitution to American citizens was never justified, either morally or legally. Conferring rights upon illegal aliens is the opposite of civil rights. It is diminishing the rights of American citizens.

    2. How is punishing legal, African-American citizens-who've been part of the fabric of this continent for over three centuries-by awarding rights anf privileges to illegal aliens who are not entitled to them a good thing?

What does illegal immigration have to do with hispanics? Seriously?

The way illegal immigrant activists act shows me that THEY are the ones shoving drivel, that all illegal aliens are hispanics or all hispanics are illegal aliens, down our throats!

Spare me the rhetoric & propaganda!

Illegal immigrants have NOTHING to offer, they are illegal.

Ark. governor bashes immigration bill as race-baiting
Huckabee challenges GOP lawmaker on Christian views for limiting public assistance

    Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN)
    January 28, 2005
    By David Hammer, Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK - Gov. Mike Huckabee heaped criticism Thursday upon immigration legislation in the Arkansas Legislature, describing it as "inflammatory ... race-baiting and demagoguery" and challenging the Christian values of its main sponsor.

Huckabee said the bill, which seeks to forbid public assistance and voting rights to illegal immigrants, "enflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there's a real problem. But there's not."

The bill was filed by Republican Sens. Jim Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes of Fort Smith, whose northwest Arkansas region includes the state's fastest-growing Hispanic population.

Huckabee, also a Republican and a Baptist minister, said Arkansans should be welcoming hardworking immigrants of all races. He singled out Holt, who often talks of his strong Christian beliefs, saying, "I drink a different kind of Jesus juice. My faith says don't make false accusations against somebody. In the Bible, it's called 'don't bear false witness.'"

Huckabee said Holt's plan to deny prenatal care for illegal immigrants goes against their shared anti-abortion principles - that unborn fetuses should have a citizen's right to life. Joe McCutchen, the Fort Smith resident who lobbies for the immigration bill and has campaigned for tighter immigration restrictions around the country, called those fetuses "anchor babies."

In response, Holt said he was hurt by the governor questioning his faith and, in so doing, compared immigrants to children.

"I would be doing a disservice to my children as a father to continue to let them do things illegal or wrongly without correcting them," he said. "That is really and truly compassion because we're teaching them to be better citizens."

Holt emphasized that he was not prejudiced, "except against those with prejudice."

"I just want to uphold the law and protect the benefits that apply to citizens," Holt said.

Huckabee said he wasn't calling any particular person a bigot but said raising such a bill without cause only leads bigots to think, falsely he said, that immigrants are stealing their benefits.

Huckabee said illegal immigrants "can't vote, can't collect Social Security benefits. They don't get a tax refund, but they pay sales tax, gasoline tax, and property tax when they pay their rent. We don't let them vote. They don't get welfare benefits. And they don't get unemployment benefits.

"We're talking about giving children not free college, only the opportunity to be treated with the same opportunity as any Arkansas high school graduate would have," Huckabee said.

Esta siempre a mi gusto leyendo sus mensajes. Es muy importante no a pensar que ser Latino es mismo ser illegal. Si tiene los papeles bien venido a el EEUU si no tiene por favor vive en su propria pais. Ilegales afuera.

Real Americans do not bring their friends and relatives here or assist them to remin wthout legal immigration papers.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

    Someone should tell them that.

Arkansas governor talks politics, immigrants at GOP gathering
New Hampshire Sunday News (Manchester, NH)

    August 28, 2005
    By PAT GROSSMITH
    Union Leader Staff

MANCHESTER -- Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee yesterday downplayed any Presidential ambitions he may have, saying he was in the state to help raise money for the state Republican Party.

Still, it was the first time the Republican Southern Baptist minister had ever stepped foot in the first-in-the-nation primary state. And he said he was keeping his options open.

Huckabee, chairman of the National Governors Association, was reelected governor of a state where Democrats hold 86 percent of all elected offices. Republicans there, he said, are an "endangered species."

That may explain why, when he took over the Governor's Office, he found the door to his office nailed shut from the inside. There were no computers, no copiers and no furnishings. His state car turned out to be a 1987 Ford that had been in two wrecks, had a crease on it and had no air conditioning.

Huckabee kept fellow Republicans laughing yesterday as the keynote speaker at the state GOP's Issues & Answers Series Breakfast at the Radisson Center of NH.

He told the audience of about 80 he flew in from Los Angeles after appearing live on the Bill Maher show Friday night on HBO.

He said one of the guests was Cindy Sheehan, evoking an audible groan from the audience. Sheehan is the Vacaville, Calif. mother whose son, Casey, 24, was killed in Iraq five days after he arrived there.

She's been camping outside President Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch where he's vacationing. Sheehan has said she plans to remain there until he meets with her.

"I felt like General Custer at the Little Big Horn," Huckabee said. "I felt really out-numbered last night."

During a question-and-answer period here, Huckabee said he triumphed in his gubernatorial bids by keeping politics out of the race and bringing in ideas.

Politics does not matter to a single mother working two jobs and needing medical care for her child or to someone wanting a pothole patched, he said.

Politics, Huckabee said, is of little consequence to someone who does not have a job.

Real solutions to real problems are needed, he said.

Washington is not getting anything done because it is paralyzed and polarized, Huckabee said.

He said reform is coming from the states when it comes to education, welfare, economic development and technology.

The Arkansas governor said every day his being an ordained Southern Baptist minister is used against him. But, he said he entered politics because of his pro-life stance and because he felt politicians did not understand how their actions affected people's lives.

Huckabee agreed a "hot" issue today is illegal immigrants. He said the country's borders need to be protected, not so much from those trying to get into this country to earn a living, but to keep out the person trying to sneak in a dirty bomb.

He said the country's 11 million illegal immigrants and the companies that employ them have created an underground economy. Without them, he said, our economy would collapse.

He said people complain illegal immigrants are taking their jobs. But, he said, when he asks individuals to give him names and addresses of people who want to work in a poultry-processing plant deboning chickens, no one does.

Talking with reporters after the breakfast meeting, Huckabee said the Republican Party needs to work on showing its compassionate side.

"I don't know if it's the reality or it's the perception that Republicans are more interested in businesses and corporations than they are people," he said. "Frankly, good policies will have an impact across all socio-economic boundaries."

And he said he thought it was "ridiculous" that a New Hampshire woman filed a complaint against Dr. Terry Bennett, who practices in Rochester, after he bluntly told her she was obese.

"My doctor called me fat," said Huckabee, who lost 110 pounds after his physician told him he had diabetes and could die in 10 years if he did not lose weight.

Huckabee, who turned 50 last week, went on a diet, began exercising and today runs four to five miles, four times a week and marathons.

He said the title of his fourth book, "Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork," was based on what his doctor told him.

From Manchester, Huckabee headed to Hollis for a Republican "Steakout" hosted by Nashua Republicans. He replaced Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, another potential GOP Presidential candidate, who canceled for family reasons.

Then he attended the Strafford County Republican Picnic Pig Roast and Family Day in Dover. About 800 people were expected at the event.

Perhaps that's because illegal labor has driven down the average salary to subsistance levels, you cretinous dolt.

"My doctor called me fat," said Huckabee...

To quote the great Dean Wormer, "fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

Huckabee meets two out of those three criteria.
