MNCounty Jail to Hold ICE Detainees -
(Albert Lea, MN) -- A southern minnesota jail will be housing detainees for the federal government as early as next month.
Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig tells KIMT News 3 that the county signed a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement this week. Detainees awaiting deportation on immigration charges will be held at the Freeborn County Detention Center.
To accommodate the extra inmates, the Sheriff's Department will have to hire several more deputies. The County Board of Supervisors has approved the hiring of 9 additional staff members for the detention center. More positions could be added later.
The county will get $77.02 a day for each federal inmate it holds.
The jail has 177 beds and is licensed to hold 122 inmates. Sheriff Harig says on the average day, the jail holds about 55 to 60 inmates.
The first federal inmates are expected to arrive in April.
