Mo. House votes to bar IAs from public colleges

Mo. House votes to bar illegal immigrants from public colleges

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri House members vote to bar illegal immigrants from public colleges.

The legislation would require higher education institutions to verify to lawmakers that they have not knowingly enrolled illegal immigrants before they receive state money.

House members gave first-round approval to the bill Wednesday by a voice vote. That came after they defeated an amendment to exempt community colleges from the bill.

A 1996 federal law already prohibits states from offering in-state tuition to illegal immigrants unless they offer the same tuition break to all U.S. citizens.

But at least 10 states have enacted laws providing in-state tuition to illegal immigrants anyway. Those include neighboring Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma.

So those 10 states are violating federal law? They should not be getting any federal money and the colleges fined.

if citizens were smart they would start sueing those colleges and demanding instate tuition just like illegals are getting.
I have heard of a few lawsuits but not enough, that would put the brakes on that program right now.

Missouri House OKs bill that would bar illegal immigrants from enrolling in public colleges
    By JASON NOBLE

    The Star’s Jefferson City correspondent

JEFFERSON CITY | The Missouri House approved a bill Thursday that would bar illegal immigrants from enrolling in public colleges and universities in the state.

The bill, which mirrors existing federal law, is necessary to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not spent educating illegal immigrants, proponents said.

The bill, HB 1463, passed 112-39 and will now go to the Senate for consideration.

Democratic opponents called the bill racist and likened it to Jim Crow laws.

“This approach to governance is about nothing more than hatemongering and building wedge issues,â€
