Mo. lawmakers debate limits for illegal immigrants
    Posted: Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 9:37 a.m.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Missourians applying for public benefits would have to prove their immigration status under legislation given first-round approval by the House.

Those who can't prove legal residence in the U.S. could continue getting aid for 90 days. But they would then be reported to federal immigration authorities if they can't prove they're legally in the U.S. after three months.

Bill supporters say tax dollars shouldn't be spent on those who aren't legally in the U.S.

But Democratic critics said cutting off illegal immigrants from public benefits would put more pressure on charities and nonprofit groups to provide help.

    MO: lawmakers

NO. Cutting off benefits to illegals will put pressure on them to go home. (or to Texas-which is the same thing.)

The charities and non profits that advocate for giving services for illegals should have the burden of providing it out of donations. If the donations will not cover the cost of servicing illegals they should realize that the American people do not want them here. The taxpayers should not be forced by the power of taxation to support beneficiaries that most opposed being here.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Wow, don't you just love that liberal logic? God forbid the charities actually use money that people freely gave.

Although I think that if the charities are supporting illegal activity they should lose their tax exempt status.

Please don't give up Texan123. Those of us in the rest of the States have been slow to wake up to what has been happening in the Sunbelt.

Good for them, bad for us here in IL

I think that's a good common sense piece of legislation. They've effectively separated from lumping all immigrants together, as advocate groups love to do. Once separated, they can't get any support for illegals, well done.

Although I would be happy if it passed, I would be sad for all of us in IL. It appears our neighboring states are all passing enforcement legislation while our know-it-all uber-liberal state government is essentially inviting them all here.

In the Chicago area we already have the highest relative tax rate in the country. Now we're going to have to pay for the increased burden of even more illegals flocking here. As much as I love Chicago, something has got to give!
