Mom of girl at center of deportation controversy 'baffled'

If you think this is as insane as I do, even if you live outside of Oregon, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call Governor's Advocacy Office line at 503-945-6904.

To get a full perspective on how incredibly underhanded and sneaky the State of Oregon is being in this case, watch the videos at the links below. What you will see will shock you, especially the video about the Grandparents going to court to stop deportation.

You can reach the Oregon Department of Human Services:

Dr. Bruce Goldberg, Director Oregon Depatment of Human Services at DHS.Directorsoffice@state.or.us

Greg Parker, Communications Officer Oregon Department of Human Services at greg.w.parker@state.or.us.

Mother of girl at center of controversy 'baffled'

    http://www.katu.com/news/specialreports/17539219.html

WILSONVILLE, Ore. - The mother of a 2-year-old girl at the center of a controversy similar to what happened with Gabriel Allred told KATU News in an exclusive interview on Thursday that she would like her daughter to remain in the United States, rather than be sent to Mexico to live with a family she is not related to.

Margaux Stamps, 26, is in a minimum security jail in Wilsonville serving time for criminal mistreatment. She is not allowed to have contact with her three kids but says she still loves them and is afraid she will never see them again.

In prison 11 months now, Stamps said she understands her two kids from a previous relationship have no one else to turn to but their grandparents in Mexico. She does not understand why the Department of Human Services would consider sending Faith, her daughter with her current boyfriend, with them.

"That just baffles me. I don't understand how anyone could think that would make sense or be in her best interest. She's not even related," she said. "I don't think she'd be taken care of well at all because she's not related and the culture is different. And I don't even see how she'd survive over there."

The 2-year-old is currently living with her jailed father's parents in Hillsboro.

Stamps said the home Maurice and Luz Cephus provide is better than the conditions she saw in Mexico several years ago during a visit to see her ex-boyfriend's parents.

"It's not safe. Not somewhere you'd want your children to grow up," she said, describing their neighborhood in Mexico City. "I think it's selfish for them to want to take my children from this country and into theirs - especially a neighborhood that is so poor and dangerous."

But there is another side to this story.

KATU News tracked down a family member of the Mexican grandparents living in Hillsboro. He said his sister and brother-in-law lead a comfortable, middle class life and are ready and willing to take in their two biological grandchildren. He said they have been told by DHS they would also have to adopt Faith. In essence, they would have to adopt all three or get none of them.

Stamps said DHS may have good intentions when it tries to keep siblings together, but her daughter should be adopted by a couple who clearly wants her.

"The way that Faith is progressing, the things she's learning at her age surprise me. And I just think (Maurice and Luz Cephus have) gone through a lot trying to take care of her," she said.

Stamps knows she cannot make the final decision and told KATU News she wishes she had been a better mom when she had the chance. She is scheduled to be released from prison next April and said she is taking anger management classes to help her become a better parent.

"I made some mistakes and it's costing me now," she said. "It's very hard to swallow what's happening right now because of my mistakes."

Since KATU News began this investigation, DHS has said it is still too soon to tell whether a judge will indeed send Faith to Mexico.

The family member who spoke with KATU News said his sister and brother-in-law have been told DHS is moving forward with this plan. If the kids end up going together to Mexico City, he said he believes they'll have "a good life" with a couple who have the means to visit the U.S. several times a year.

If you are a member of another online community and can copy and paste a copy of my post above, please do so. We need to turn the HOT lights on the Oregon DHS and they only react to EXTREME public pressure.

Also, please make your local talk show hosts aware of this story. We need the Governor to feel national pressure.
