Is ICE targeting students at school bus stops?

Is ICE targeting students at school bus stops?

A local group claims teens are being targeted by ICE officials on their way to school.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A local group is begging Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to protect its students, saying teens are afraid to go to school.

The group claims teens are being targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on their way to school.

The families say good kids are getting targeted, one allegedly picked up at a school bus stop.

But ICE says these aren't kids, they're adults who broke the law, and they're just enforcing a judge's decision that these teens have to leave the country.

We met with families, sobbing, living in fear.

These are mothers whose teenage sons were picked up by ICE and now are on the brink of deportation.

One of those teens, who was picked up while on his way to school, is 19-year-old Yefri Bertin Sorto-Hernandez ; he was picked up at 6:30 in the morning on his way to West Mecklenberg High. His family says he was waiting on the bus stop.

ICE calls that a categorically false claim, saying Hernandez was in a parking lot near his home, which happens to be a few yards from a bus stop.

According to ICE, they're just doing their job; a judge ordered Hernandez removed from the country a year ago, and saying, "ICE focuses its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security".

Hernandez' supporters say he was a model student, never got in trouble and he posed no threat. The only law he broke was coming to the U.S. Illegally.

Now the group claims students across CMS are too afraid to go to school, worried that Immigration is watching, waiting to pick them up on their way too and from school.

CMS issued this statement: "Superintendent Clark initiated a meeting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and local law enforcement officials to request that schools and bus stops be considered safe harbors for our students."

As part of its policies, ICE already doesn't pick up students at schools, however, they have agreed to not pick up at bus stops either, but denied doing it in this case.
