More Allegedly Illegal Immigrants in Custody

More allegedly illegal immigrants in custody

ANGLETON — Federal immigration authorities have taken custody of a group of people believed to be illegal immigrants from parts of South America and Honduras in Central America, according to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department.

A call from a motorist led the sheriff’s department to the Ford pickup the group of 14 people were traveling in Tuesday morning when an investigator began following them on Highway 288. But the group, including about 11 people who were underneath a rubber mat over the pickup’s bed, ran from police into a nearby wooded area.

Seven from the group — four women and three men ages 17 to their early 40s — described by the sheriff’s department as hungry and dehydrated, ended up in police custody by that afternoon.

Two more men were picked up by deputies Wednesday between 6 and 6:30 a.m. off CR 339, Sheriff’s Department Investigator James “Chip” Gayle IV said. The road is south of CR 45, not too far from where police first started searching for the group.

“They were kind of glad to see our folks,” Sheriff Charles Wagner said.

As of Thursday afternoon, no additional people from the group had been found by police.

Police have learned that those in the group, mostly from Honduras, said they each had paid someone $5,200 to get to their destination, the sheriff’s department has reported.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Houston office is conducting an investigation.

“They’re not saying anything other than what they had already told us,” Gayle said. The department, however, was able to get more information about the pickup, which they learned was registered to a Houston resident.

The pickup has been sold four times in the last four months, Gayle said, noting the last three sales were through auctions. That isn’t unusual, considering some people buy vehicles at low prices at auctions then sell them at higher prices at the next auction, he said.

The sheriff’s department hasn’t determined who was driving the truck, Wagner said.

“If it was the registered owner driving, he knows the area and knows how to get back to Houston,” Wagner said. “The rest of them didn’t know where they were.”

I think the Bush Administration is just trying to make it "look like they're half serious". We all know that.

If he was really serious, he'd come out and say it. He'd give a real warning to the employers and he would tell people who are in our country ILLEGALLY that they should return to thier own countries.

The question is HOW MANY Americans are "buying it" ?
